Chapter 4: Another World

Clearly, the carriage wheels were not equipped with any suspension, making the ride extremely bumpy.
Before the dog-headed man could even react, his head slammed against the ceiling, contorting his face in pain for a moment. Almost instinctively, his heart tightened. “Oh no…”
In the next instant, he realized that Chu Zhu effortlessly snatched the pistol right from his hand, the motion so smooth it seemed as if he had been about to hand it over willingly. It even gave him the illusion that Chu Zhu had practiced this move many times before…
The dog-headed man exclaimed, “...Ah?!”
…
An empty backstreet.
“...Ah?!” The young man stood there dumbfounded, glancing once at the vanishing carriage and then up at the second floor. Suddenly, he came to a heartbreaking realization.
“No... that can’t be right! They saw it—they must have been frightened, right? I haven’t erased their memories of this part yet!”
“This is bad. I’ve made such a huge blunder during my probation. Can I even become a full member? Nooo!!!”
“Wait, don’t run! I really mean no harm…”
The young man painfully chased after them, but his physical condition was no better than an ordinary person’s.
Before long, he was left far behind by the carriage.
Chu Zhu hummed a tune while casually playing with the pistol. Without looking directly at the two horses, he flicked the reins left and right with the skill and flair of a master charioteer—like Emperor Taizong of Song riding through the streets—commanding the horses to gallop swiftly at his will.
“...I give up!” The dog-headed man finally broke his long silence. Perhaps it was only now that his head stopped hurting enough for him to think straight. He spoke at last.
“Cut me a break! What do you want? To turn on your own kind, or something else… Heh, I never expected that after all these years of fighting side by side, we’d fall into your hands.”
“No, no,” Chu Zhu gently shook the pistol. “Like I said, I don’t mean you much harm.”
“You’re not going to kill me? Seriously? We’re not children anymore—don’t try to feed me such nonsense that even a toddler wouldn’t believe.” The dog-headed man scoffed.

He spoke to himself as if resigned to fate. “What was that just now? A superpowered individual? Looks like they were planning to storm the bank through the tunnels… Heh, I never thought such things really existed! Why haven’t I ever come across one before?”
“I’ve robbed banks before… Maybe it’s because those were small-town banks. Jinghai City, after all, is one of the three international financial hubs in the East!”
“Uh…” Chu Zhu’s eye twitched slightly as he silently mocked in his mind. The reason a superpowered person showed up was mainly because... he glanced at the keys and map set aside. Purely robbing money wouldn’t normally summon such forces from the authorities. But he chose not to elaborate further.
“Don’t worry, your men might get caught, but won’t be in mortal danger for now!” Chu Zhu reassured him, pausing briefly before continuing, “Like I said, do you want to know the cause of Zhang Xun’s death?”
The dog-headed man stared at Chu Zhu for a long moment, then closed his eyes and finally said, “Tell me what you want us to do, straight up. If there’s a way to save my men, I’ll risk everything for you!”
“Great,” Chu Zhu clapped his hands with a pleased smile. Most people wouldn’t trust someone in this situation, but he wasn’t the same. He knew the dog-headed man was a man of his word, loyal and honorable. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have managed to build such a bold gang daring enough to rob banks in this era.
Chu Zhu casually tossed the pistol back.
“...Ah?!” The dog-headed man was at a loss for how many times he had been shocked already. He looked at Chu Zhu several times but did not break his promise. Silently, he tucked the gun into his waistband and went to check on his men.
After more than half an hour of jolting travel…
“Sir, we’re farmers… yeah, farmers!” The dog-headed man awkwardly pulled out proof of his occupation, speaking in a jumbled, uneducated manner that marked him as a simple, honest man.
“This carriage of yours…” The gatekeeper, dressed in a crooked military uniform, squinted suspiciously.
The carriage was now very different from before. The sealed compartment had been dismantled, wooden boards stacked on the carriage floor… and instead of two horses pulling it, a donkey was now hitched. The two horses remained inside the city.
“Sir… this is…” The dog-headed man smiled sheepishly and took out two copper coins from his pocket.
“Hmph! Who wants your two lousy coins?” The gatekeeper grumbled but took the money anyway. He glanced again at Chu Zhu, who hadn’t changed clothes, creating a sharp contrast with the dog-headed man and Bear-headed man who had already changed. Though puzzled, the gatekeeper showed no further interest and waved them off impatiently, “Go on.”
“This era really is something else!” Chu Zhu was speechless. The bank had been robbed, yet the city gates remained open? Although some robbers were still inside and likely already captured, it was still surprising.
“Where to next?” The dog-headed man asked again.
“Towards the sunlight, then follow the map!” Chu Zhu lazily tossed the map to the dog-headed man.

“...” The dog-headed man was truly baffled by what this man was up to. So, was this person actually planning for him to help carry out the follow-up plan after obtaining the map and keys? But he didn’t want to pay for it, so he pulled all those stunts earlier… huh?
No… it can’t be.
Ridiculous!
But this seemed like the only reasonable explanation at the moment?!
What kind of curse had he brought on himself by running into such a nutcase? What a beast!
Despite his inner curses, the dog-headed man obediently started driving the carriage, consulting the map. Part of the reason was his deep obsession with the truth behind his father’s death…
“Big Boss.” Bear-headed man cautiously spoke.
The dog-headed man turned his gaze. “???”
“Boss… well, I figure he’s your boss now! So wouldn’t that make him my boss’s boss?” Sensing the dog-headed man’s confusion, the Bear-headed man said earnestly, “That means Big Boss, right?”
“I…” The dog-headed man choked on his words, thousands of things stuck in his throat, but finally could only nod silently.
“I know what you want to ask!” Chu Zhu’s eye twitched. Even after all he had been through, hearing that title still involuntarily reminded him of the brick phone from the real world.
He sighed and explained, “Don’t wonder why you never encountered this before when robbing banks! Don’t be surprised you’d never heard of superpowered people until now!”
“Because, theoretically, they belong to another world… normal people aren’t meant to know about them! And they don’t interfere in ordinary matters… Hmm, robbing banks counts as an ordinary matter!”
“Basically, if you rob money and get away without the police catching you, they won’t get involved.”
