Chapter 44: Everyday Life After Returning to School
Rehe City.
Early morning.
Liu Jun opened his eyes, listening to the sound of rain outside.
"Their ideals are wonderful, but the things they weave are, after all, only half-finished prototypes."
"Even with a whole crowd of pseudo-saints, the creation of life is the most profound science and requires much more time to be polished."
Only then did Liu Jun realize the terrifying difficulty of it all.
If it were just him alone, trying to create new species would probably be nearly impossible.
It required teamwork to cross-check and patch the flaws.
"Yet, regardless of success or failure, when they approach their twenties and are ready to perish, they will make a desperate last stand to challenge me."
"At this rate, in a single night, I will have to wipe out several new races."
"This kind of extinction-level... and even world-destroying work is far too frequent!"
"The God of Longevity will truly be reduced to the God of Slaughter of this era, wreaking such havoc that all living beings tremble in fear."
Even so, he had acquired a massive stack of blueprints for various mythical creatures.
This was a massive profit.
Did this count as an alternative form of tower defense, monster hunting, and item drops?
No.
It should be:
I, the Creator, hunt monsters, level up, and spawn races?
"There are gains and losses. If I survive the Disaster of Wisdom, I will achieve a massive leap forward! I will have a whole stack of mythical creature prototypes in my hands that I can use to run sand table simulations."
Liu Jun looked at the precious information in his hands.
"Yet... can I survive it?"
Liu Jun felt that this battle of wits and courage was simply too intense.
Kill, kill, kill!
He had to wipe out several races every night, and he had no idea when he might capsize and fail.
These races were even specifically tailored to counter him, the God of Longevity.
Fortunately, he secretly possessed dual talents, otherwise he might have overturned long ago!
Last night's wave had exposed some of his cards once again, and he had no idea what kind of abomination they would cook up and wait for him with next time.
"It is so hard being me."
"I am a Creator, yet all I do all day is destroy worlds?"
With a sigh, Liu Jun heard Zou Anmeng's voice drifting from the living room.
"Time to head out, we have class today."
Thud, thud, thud.
A knock on the door followed closely.
"You can usually skip, but today is the college entrance examination medical checkup."
"From now on, checkups will be every half month until the entrance exam begins."
Li Feng chimed in as well, shouting along.
"Got it. Today is Monday? Wait for me to put on my school uniform." Liu Jun also felt a bit mentally fatigued, utterly sick of slaughtering those races.
It was indeed time to head out and relax a bit.
...
Rehe City Thirteenth Key High School.
Taking the tram to school, Liu Jun and the others held up their umbrellas and walked into the campus amidst the bustling crowd.
With the college entrance examination approaching, many students had taken leave for independent study, sprinting toward the finish line in various ways, leaving about a third of the seats in the classrooms empty.
Today, however, virtually all the students had arrived.
Including Bai Youxuan, the school belle who had long vanished from sight and entered independent study mode early on.
Such a high school superstar attracted countless gazes wherever she went.
Some said she was the strongest student Rehe Thirteenth High School had produced in recent years, holding a strong hope of stepping into that realm.
Walking into the classroom, the students were passionately discussing angels and the little angel brain-chips.
"The King of Angels is so handsome!"
"Ah, my great king."
"The Angel Queen has such a tragic fate as well, sigh..."
Several days had passed, yet the craze showed no sign of subsiding.
Liu Jun, Zou Anmeng, and Li Feng—three total wallflowers—quietly took their seats and listened to the surrounding chatter without drawing attention to themselves.
The classroom was abuzz with noise.
A student nearby was acting a bit unhinged, shaking his head and babbling: "Hahaha, art, art! I've attained enlightenment! Behold my Yangming-style sudden awakening!"
Another student looked displeased: "Did he take meds or something? The high is so intense."
A student analyzed: "No choice, it's the final hundred-day sprint before the college entrance exam. If you don't take the drugs, how are you supposed to get stronger? With better grades, the assigned workplace will be much better! Higher salary, better conditions!"
Everyone nodded in agreement: "Sigh, nothing we can do about it!"
The students of Rehe City would not go to university after the college entrance exam.
They would stay in Rehe City to give back to the city and take up jobs.
However, their college entrance examination scores severely impacted their job placements.
A better workplace meant a much higher probability of breaking through before the age of thirty.
"Speaking of inspiration-boosting drugs, bro, I recommend this newly released Wisdom Skating Ice. The kick is strong, the inspiration burst period lasts long, and wisdom grows fast..."
"But I heard the side effects of this one are not small. Your temples bulge and your head gets all pointy."
"Anyway, the rain has already made us bald, so it doesn't matter!"
Liu Jun instantly thought of the mushrooms growing back at his home:
The ice sent down by the Creator next door hit even harder and purer, having already cultivated a whole bunch of crazed addictive fungi.
Those beautiful artists experiencing bursts of inspiration had created all sorts of bizarre new races and were already high as a kite.
Right at that moment, a group of students from another class were chatting about current trending topics.
"Where's your little angel brain-chip? Did you sell it?"
"Nope, figures it'll still go up in price. A few days ago, some thugs blocked the gate threatening people to sell their brain-chips, and they got beaten right out on the spot."
"The school leaders personally stepped in to negotiate, and I heard the other party was a small-time company dealing in micro-loans and brain-chip acquisitions."
"Heh, I heard some people still sold theirs. Total cowards."
"Anyway, I'm not selling. I'm hoarding a bit longer."
...
Liu Jun listened thoughtfully.
Things seemed to have been resolved; not bad at all.
Reality wasn't a pulp fiction novel; if someone threatened students, the school would definitely step up first.
Especially with the college entrance exams so close now.
Did the school leaders not care about their performance reviews anymore?
"What do you guys think the era after the King of Angels will look like?"
"No idea."
"Come on, speak your mind freely."
"Well, weaving species—they possess infinite possibilities. Aren't these Butterfly people the creator-deities from myth and legend?"
"I reckon in the era after the King of Angels, weaving technology will be thoroughly perfected, and we'll see a species explosion akin to the Cambrian period, right?"
"A Jurassic species explosion?"
"Yeah, the angels in the sky starting to create terrestrial species in large numbers. I can suddenly picture it."
"I've attained enlightenment! The mystery of history and the truth of the biological explosion in our textbooks are actually appearing right before our eyes."
"Liu Jun, why aren't you saying anything? Go on, say something!"
Liu Jun remained silent.
Thanks for the invite; currently in the Jurassic period, having just crushed a few species explosion variants last night.
Tonight, I'll probably have to keep killing!
Odds are I'll have to slaughter for another ten days or so, destroying the era a dozen times and killing off twenty or thirty new species.
The species explosion period was exhausting, and the enemies were extremely hard to kill.
Seeing Liu Jun stay silent, they continued chatting:
"According to the theory of biological evolution, during a species explosion with so many creatures, natural selection and survival of the fittest are bound to happen."
"Brothers, natural selection—who is 'nature'?"
"Hmm, the Prophet?"
"The Prophet is the god who masters longevity, in charge of the lifespans of all creatures under heaven. Whichever species he chooses lives, and whichever species he chooses goes extinct."
"Biological mega-evolution, countless species popping up, and then natural selection where 'nature' is the God of Longevity—that actually makes sense!"
"Yeah, all the later races were strictly curated by the Prophet, survival of the fittest?"
Liu Jun: "......"
What on earth were these people talking about?
Terrifying!
Was this the pioneering mindset of scholars?
Had he known that chatting during class breaks at school could be this exciting, with daily discussions about angels and various developments in the Jurassic...
Perhaps he really should have been attending class!
