Once they had made up their minds, the three of them quickly prepared to leave. Everyone entering or leaving Dongfang Tian’s territory had to report it, and Guo Hanxue was clearly under special scrutiny. The moment the guards learned that she intended to leave, they instinctively refused to let her pass.

Guo Hanxue frowned at her classmates, who wore expressions of firm disapproval. “I’m only going out to take care of something. Other people are allowed to leave. Why should I be the only exception?”

The men guarding the exit looked at her helplessly. Heaven knew the president had given them strict instructions: if Guo Hanxue tried to leave, they were to stop her and notify him immediately. But he had never said how they were supposed to stop her.

As for forcibly keeping her there, they did not dare. It was not merely because President Dongfang valued Guo Hanxue so highly. More importantly, the old members of both clubs knew that her temper was nothing like her gentle and adorable appearance suggested.

“Move aside! I’m in a hurry!” Guo Hanxue, bow in hand, radiated icy menace. Her beautiful eyes swept over them, and all four guards instinctively shrank their necks. One of them had clearly once belonged to the archery team. Having been thoroughly acquainted with their former president’s temper, he had kept his head down from the very beginning and had not dared say a word.

When Guo Hanxue’s gaze landed on him, she pointed at him at once. “Hu Wei! Go move those things out of the way!”

Hu Wei, formerly of the archery team, instinctively straightened his back. “Yes, President!”

He scampered over and moved aside the objects blocking the stairwell. It was not until Guo Hanxue had led Jiang Yi and the others away that the guards finally realized what had happened.

Hu Wei gave a bitter smile. “Hurry and inform President Dongfang…”

…

As Jiang Yi followed them down the stairs, he smiled curiously. “I never imagined President Hanxue carried such authority. Even I was nearly intimidated by your presence…”

Guo Hanxue lifted her chin proudly. “Well? Want to acknowledge me as your captain? From now on, I’ll have your back!”

Jiang Yi rolled his eyes. “Don’t even think about stealing my position. I’m your captain for one day, and I’ll be your captain for life. Just follow me obediently.”

There was a hidden meaning in Jiang Yi’s words, but Guo Hanxue seemed not to understand it. She merely grinned and raised her bow. “That isn’t certain. Strength speaks for itself. Beat me first, then I’ll call you captain.”

Laughing and chatting, they soon left the gymnasium through a safe passageway. Aside from Jiang Yi, Haruto and Guo Hanxue knew the area like the backs of their hands. Haruto said only one sentence before Guo Hanxue had already determined the zombie’s location.

The three of them did not dare pass through the woods. Jiang Yi was afraid they would be attacked by ferocious beasts again. At present, Guo Hanxue was the only one of them who could be considered fully intact, and he had no intention of offering themselves up as food to some beast.

Haruto discovered that the zombie was not far away. It was in a small plaza that served as an outdoor basketball court during the day and, at night, as a favorite place for university students to skateboard and stroll.

Before they had even entered, Jiang Yi could hear the zombie’s roar from a distance. The sound was terribly loud and chaotic. When he finally approached the plaza and looked inside, he was stunned by the towering figure standing amid the small horde of zombies.

As far as Jiang Yi knew, the tallest person he had ever seen had been no more than one meter ninety. But the zombie surrounded by the horde completely shattered his understanding of human height. It stood well over two meters tall.

If it had not been wearing a well-fitting basketball uniform, Jiang Yi might even have suspected that it had awakened some bizarre ability. He also noticed something unexpected: the zombies in the plaza were not being led by a giant zombie. Although ordinary zombies were generally afraid of evolved zombies, the enormous zombie in the center of the plaza was actually being surrounded and hemmed in by the others. The surrounding zombies roared at it without pause.

The giant zombie roared back in a frenzy. With one sweep of its enormous palm, it sent a broad swath of zombies flying. The palm tore through the air like a violent gale, making the entire plaza especially deafening.

With a series of wet crunches, the giant zombie knocked away a group of ordinary zombies, picked up one of their severed arms, and began chewing on it. It paid no attention to the zombies gathering around it once more…

The three of them stood far away atop a small pavilion, watching the scene in the plaza. Though they found it strange, they all sensed an opportunity. This evolved zombie seemed unable to intimidate ordinary zombies. If they could find a way to lure the others away, dealing with it should be easy.

Guo Hanxue counted the zombies in the plaza, but she disagreed with Jiang Yi’s plan. “Too troublesome. I’ll do it.”

She held the Golden Ancient Bow in her left hand. With her right, she reached out and drew a dark purple arrow, setting it against the string.

Haruto glanced at the distance between them and the plaza, puzzled. “President Guo, that’s nearly five hundred meters. What are you planning to do?”

Guo Hanxue licked her lips excitedly as she gazed at the plaza nearby. “There are eight zombies left in total—one large and seven small. Here’s the plan: I’ll lure the smaller ones over first. You two hide yourselves. Once the zombies scatter, attack the big one immediately.”

Jiang Yi rolled his eyes. This was supposed to be a battle plan? It was obviously just charging in headfirst.

Still, if she really could separate them, he and Haruto would be able to make good use of the opening against the evolved zombie.

After thinking it over, Jiang Yi agreed to Guo Hanxue’s plan. Haruto led him stealthily into the plaza, where a huge electronic screen stood. It normally displayed the evening news, but now it conveniently shielded the two of them from the zombies’ sight.

The moment they had hidden themselves, a sharp whistle split the air. Haruto’s keen eyes caught a streak of purple light as it pierced through a zombie’s head and sent the corpse flying. It crashed to the ground two or three meters away.

The sudden change startled every zombie. Before they could even determine what had happened, a second purple arrow ripped through the air and once again exploded a zombie’s head.

This time, every zombie clearly saw the direction from which the purple arrow had come. Without the slightest hesitation, the entire plaza erupted in furious howls. Every zombie began rushing toward that direction.

Their rigid bodies made them painfully slow, but they still charged relentlessly toward the source of the arrows.

As the horde dispersed, the enormous zombie, which had been crouched on the ground devouring a corpse, finally came into view. Jiang Yi and Haruto exchanged a glance and rushed out at the same time.

Jiang Yi moved with incredible speed. He gripped his sword in his left hand and swung it once, sending the sheath flying from the blade. The black leather cord wrapped swiftly around his wrist, forming what looked like a bracer.

His sudden appearance made the zombie raise its head. Jiang Yi’s eyes lit up, and he brought his blade down with all his strength.

“Die!”

The sharp black blade struck the zombie’s head. But instead of cleaving straight through as he had expected, the blow met unexpected resistance. The blade veered aside, shaving away only half the zombie’s eyebrows.

Seeing his hair and eyebrows fluttering above him while a hand remained clamped between his teeth, the zombie let out a furious roar and reached for Jiang Yi.

Jiang Yi spun away, refusing to confront it head-on.

Haruto, a step behind, arrived just in time. His right hand clamped around the white sword at his waist, and he drew it in a swift upward slash. The gleaming blade struck the giant zombie’s outstretched arm.

Haruto felt as though he had struck leather. The tip of his blade slid off, and his heart sank. He immediately poured all his strength into the motion and jerked the sword upward, forcing the arm braced against his blade away.

But Haruto knew perfectly well that he had not injured the creature in the slightest.

The severe wound to his left hand prevented Haruto from exerting his full strength. In his current condition, he was clearly still far from being able to deal with this bizarre giant zombie.

Jiang Yi’s black blade stabbed relentlessly at the giant zombie’s vital points. Yet the creature curled up on the ground, shielding its head. It looked like an enormous tortoise and gave Jiang Yi no opportunity to attack its weak spots.

“Roar!”

The two men surrounded it and attacked furiously, but their blades seemed to have become toys. Apart from tearing its clothes into tatters, they had not managed to leave a single wound.

Both men were rapidly exhausting their strength, while the giant zombie seemed entirely unchanged.

“Careful! Don’t let its claws scratch you!”

When the zombie suddenly attacked Haruto, Jiang Yi shouted a warning and rushed forward, cleaving through the giant zombie’s fingers.

Seeing that they had no way to harm the creature and feeling his strength nearly spent, Jiang Yi wanted to retreat temporarily. Fortunately, compared with its astonishing defense, its speed was truly tortoise-like. If it had been fast as well as impervious to blades and weapons, killing the two of them would have been effortless.

“Fall back! We’ll think of another way.”

Jiang Yi lightly tapped the ground with his foot and nimbly dodged the sharp claws sweeping toward him.

Haruto raised his long sword to block. The sharp nails scraped against the blade, sending sparks flying. Faced with such a difficult opponent, a feverish battle lust blazed in Haruto’s eyes.

Instead of retreating, he gripped his sword in his right hand and turned to charge the giant zombie.

“No. You can kill it. Stand aside. I’ll do it myself!”

His blade descended in a frenzied barrage. The giant zombie instinctively defended against the storm of strikes, each one crashing down like a bolt of thunder.

After completing the series of attacks, Haruto retreated two steps and stood panting heavily. Then, holding the sword in his right hand, he suddenly assumed a strange stance.

“Blade Kill—Thousand Flash!”

He sprang forward. The white sword rested along the outside of his left arm as he leaped into the air. From above, he unleashed a fully charged slash in an instant.

Jiang Yi’s eyes lit up. “How fast!”

Haruto’s speed abruptly reached its limit. His slash traced a streak of silver, like a dazzling galaxy, and swept across the giant zombie’s long neck.

“Graaah!”

The speed of the strike lent the blade tremendous force. At last, beneath Haruto’s all-out attack, black blood erupted from the zombie’s roaring neck.

The two men cried out in excitement.

“We did it!”
