A dozen or so security guards wielding riot forks rushed into the activity room. With great caution, they pinned Lü Yide to the ground and quickly escorted him out. It was difficult to tell whether they were restraining him or protecting him.

The others present all glanced toward Ma En.

He explained in his usual tone, “I usually work out.”

Ning Changkong had indeed seen Ma En in the fitness area before.

But no matter how you looked at it, dodging a bullet at such close range wasn’t something you could achieve just by regular exercise.

Just moments ago, Ma En had dashed in front of the youth almost in the blink of an eye, calmly snatching away his pistol—like a federal agent straight out of a movie.

Ning Changkong also noticed that Lü Yide had moved almost simultaneously with Ma En.

Yet even so, the muzzle of Lü Yide’s gun failed to catch up with Ma En’s speed.

His suspicions were confirmed…

Meanwhile, Dr. Liu stood there, bewildered. She knew the aftermath of Lü Yide’s gunshot would exceed her expectations, but she hadn’t anticipated it unfolding like this.

Ma En looked toward her.

Liu Yujun quickly turned and hurriedly left the activity room, pursuing the direction Lü Yide had taken.

Ma En recalled that she had come to see him not long ago—was this the reason?

However, many questions still lingered. Was Lü Yide’s attempt to kill him simply due to mental instability, or was there something Liu Yujun hadn’t disclosed at the time?

Therefore, he followed after her.

Ning Changkong watched Ma En’s departing figure, suppressing the urge to call him back—it wasn’t the right moment.

“You care about him a lot,” Cao Yan suddenly remarked.

She turned to face Cao Yan—an aloof beauty with striking brown skin adorned in various luxurious jewels, wearing a golden crown encrusted with multicolored gems, her features and bearing defying gender distinctions.

“What?” she responded, feigning confusion.

Cao Yan shook her head.

“I can see your anxiety and worry. Just now, you were genuinely afraid he might die. And last time, you kept sneaking glances at him when he wasn’t paying attention, didn’t you?”

Seeing the young woman about to object, Cao Yan offered a graceful smile.

“No need to lie. No one understands these feelings better than I do. Two years ago, when my partner was critically ill, I carried the same emotions you just did every day.”

Ning Changkong knew she was right—she was indeed terrified at the thought of Ma En dying—but the other had completely misunderstood her motives.

She decided to shift the topic.

“Your partner?”

Cao Yan’s expression relaxed.

“Yes, the only person I have ever cared for in this life. But unfortunately, he was mortal flesh and blood, unable to resist death. That’s why I am preparing a resurrection ritual.

“To be honest, I’m not sure I can complete it before I die myself…”

Her face grew solemn at these words.

“…So I want to remind you not to let time slip through your fingers.”

Ning Changkong replied with earnest seriousness, “I’m sure you will succeed.”

Hearing this, Cao Yan paused, then smiled.

“Do you think I don’t know I’m mad? I just can’t accept his death; I’m lost in my own illusions.

“Don’t become like me.”

Ning Changkong was stunned.

At that moment, the activity room door was pushed open.

A young, handsome doctor with a strange white “tattoo” on his face walked in—it was Xu Wen, as Ning Changkong had known him.

Dr. Xu examined the room for a few seconds, then asked calmly, “Where is Ma En?”

The girl answered, “He’s already left.”

Xu Wen frowned slightly.

“After something like this, how can he leave so casually? If the news I heard is correct, Lü Yide suddenly went mad and almost killed him, right?”

The girl nodded, “Yes.”

That was true enough.

The young doctor shook his head in frustration.

“The patients here are really troublesome.

“Did either of you notice anything unusual about Lü Yide?”

The girl glanced at Cao Yan, who clearly had no intention of answering.

“I didn’t sense anything wrong,” Ning Changkong told Xu Wen. “He was perfectly normal just last week.”

Xu Wen nodded slightly.

“Alright, you two go back first. I’ll go look for Ma En.”

With that, he turned and returned to the corridor.

The fact that Lü Yide managed to bring a gun inside was astounding. The medical staff here seemed even crazier than the psychiatric patients. Had they never considered what he might do?

No wonder one of his teachers had jumped to his death.

But if that teacher hadn’t died, Ning Changkong wouldn’t have gotten this job.

Fortunately, the wealthy young master hadn’t caused any irreversible damage.

If Lü Yide had really killed someone, Ma En certainly wouldn’t be so calm now—after all, these three were carefully chosen individuals with considerable mental strength.

Finding three more suitable candidates wouldn’t be easy, and his time was running out.

They were watching him.
