Liu Yujun came to a steady stop before the staircase and turned to face Ma En, who had followed her in.

She spoke warily.

“There are security guards in the corridor.”

“But you didn’t call them over.” Ma En casually pushed the iron door behind him shut.

Liu Yujun retreated several steps up the staircase, keeping a cautious distance between them, though she made no attempt to find the guards.

“What exactly are you trying to do?”

Ma En’s expression remained calm.

“There was never any observation period for danger, was there? You wanted me to sign that consent form entirely because of Lu Yide.”

Liu Yujun sneered.

“Even if that’s true, what can you do about it?

“Instead of worrying about what I’ve done, you should be more concerned about your own future. Lu Yide has remembered you. Once he leaves the quarantine zone, do you really think you can survive in front of him?

“You’d be better off using what little time you have left to prepare your last words.”

Ma En looked at her in confusion.

“When you first came to see me, I already thought the whole matter was strange. If you wanted me to go to the quarantine zone, why didn’t you simply tell me?

“You should know that, as far as you’re concerned, I’m just an ordinary man without power or influence. If you had explained everything clearly, I probably would have backed down sensibly. But you didn’t…

“In other words, either you really want me dead, or you have a reason you can’t explain things plainly. And if it’s the latter…”

He calmly looked at the female doctor.

Liu Yujun noticed the threat in his words.

“Yes,” she admitted. Her expression did not falter. “You’re right. But even if you told everyone else, the worst that could happen to me would be losing my job. That still wouldn’t change the fact that you’re destined to die.

“If you keep this to yourself, I can deliver your last words to Chen Yun.”

By saying this, Dr. Liu was reminding Ma En that he still had a sister to worry about, while also giving him room to bargain. She did not expect him to simply resign himself to his fate. Ma En would certainly ask her to help secure his release.

And if he truly made such a demand, she could keep negotiating with him, even dragging things out until he had no way back…

“No,” Ma En said. “You mentioned there was a way to kill Lu Yide’s second personality. How?”

Liu Yujun froze for a moment, then asked in an incredulous tone, “You want to kill him?

“Have you never considered what kind of retaliation your family and friends might face? Those wealthy people didn’t achieve what they have today by obeying the law.”

She looked at the naive young man before her with pity.

“Besides, there is no way to kill a second personality. Dissociative identity disorder doesn’t work that way. Even in cases where someone has recovered, modern medicine was not the true deciding factor.

“There is no way.”

She had expected to see disappointment on Ma En’s face.

But, contrary to her expectations, he seemed to have relaxed considerably.

“Thank you,” Ma En said with a smile.

With that, he left the bewildered Dr. Liu behind and turned back toward the bustling corridor. Quite a few patients had gathered there, discussing what had just happened among themselves.

The gunshots had driven more than a dozen patients to surround the young doctor who happened to pass by. Furious, they bombarded him with every question they could think of, trying to pry every detail from him and thus dispel the fear in their hearts.

The young doctor suddenly saw Ma En.

He struggled through the crowd and walked straight toward him.

Xu Wen.

Ma En had seen his photograph. In person, he possessed a refined, scholarly air and looked like a young doctoral researcher at some academy.

“Mr. Ma En.” He carefully shook off the patients behind him and came to a stop in front of Ma En. “You should understand that when something like this happens, you can’t simply wander off.

“I’m Xu Wen, your new attending physician.”

He extended his hand.

Ma En shook it.

“Hello.”

Xu Wen glanced to either side, his eyes sweeping rapidly over the corridor as though searching for something.

“Why did you leave the scene?” Dr. Xu asked, turning his attention back to Ma En.

“I didn’t see any reason to stay where I was.” Ma En shrugged. “I’m not normal, either.”

“That excuse won’t fool a doctor.” Xu Wen reprimanded him sternly. “But I’m not a police officer, so I won’t interrogate you. Still, you need to explain exactly what happened.

“What were you thinking at the time? Those bullets could have taken a life.”

Ma En answered calmly, “It may have been the adrenaline.”

Xu Wen turned and began walking toward the elevators.

“What concerns me is your mental state. Excessive calm can also be a sign of a problem.”

Ma En followed him.

Xu Wen pressed the button marked by an arrow pointing toward the ceiling.

“It’s a good thing you weren’t injured. Still, Liu Yujun really went too far insisting on forcing Lu Yide into your group. I’ll have him transferred immediately…”

The elevator doors slowly closed.

“I want to be discharged,” Ma En said.

Dr. Xu stopped and stared at Ma En’s reflection in the metal elevator doors, speaking in confusion.

“What?”

Ma En said, “My arrangement with Dr. Li was confidential. Even Dr. Liu doesn’t know about it. Now that you’ve taken his place, I hope we can continue the cooperation we had before.

“And, incidentally, I don’t have a mental disorder. Subduing Lu Yide wasn’t a matter of luck, either.”

Xu Wen blinked.

“But the situation is somewhat unusual…”

Ma En’s face was expressionless.

“Three million Federation credits. Normally, that wouldn’t be the price, but I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

Silence fell over the elevator.

Xu Wen could sense Ma En’s determination. If he refused outright, Ma En would certainly not let the matter rest.

Yet Xu Wen was unwilling to watch helplessly as the suitable candidate he had spent half a month finding simply walked away. Besides, money was utterly meaningless to him.

“I haven’t been in this position for very long, and I still haven’t figured out how these procedures work,” Xu Wen explained. “Consultation hours are in a few days. I’ll give you an answer then. Will that do?”

Ma En gave a slight nod.

“All right. I hope we can hear a proposal that satisfies us both.”

For now, Xu Wen seemed capable of holding a friendly conversation. Ma En simply did not know how dangerous he truly was, or what exactly he wanted.

But problems had to be solved one step at a time.

The elevator stopped.

He and Xu Wen stepped out one after the other.

“Oh, and this matter is connected to Dr. Liu,” Ma En mentioned casually. “She has some subtle misunderstandings about me. For instance, she took the information I present publicly at face value.

“She also doesn’t understand what true power really is, does she?

“Doctor Xu.”

Xu Wen narrowed his eyes and silently watched Ma En’s departing back.
