Chapter 32: You Might Not Believe This, But I Scared a Ghost to Suicide
In the hierarchy of the supernatural, the gap between each level is as vast as a chasm. A Spectre-level entity can easily take on ten Wraith-level entities single-handedly. By all conventional logic, Tu Li should have been able to crush Chen Mu as easily as one would squash an ant. That punch should have left Chen Mu dead or at least critically injured.
Yet, the reality was that Chen Mu remained unscathed, while Tu Li was sent reeling back several steps by the recoil.
This was impossible!
Indeed, it was impossible. However, there is an exception to every rule, and Chen Mu was exactly that exception. Chen Mu possessed a "General-level" item—the Armor of Death. Clad in this armor, a Spectre-level entity could not inflict even the slightest harm upon him; even a newly ascended General-level entity would struggle to breach his defenses. It was that formidable and overbearing.
"Back in the day, the Duke fought ten Generals for several days and nights just to obtain this. Looking at it now, the Armor of Death was truly worth such a desperate struggle," Chen Mu mused to himself.
Even as dim-witted as Tu Li was, he could see that something was wrong with Chen Mu. "You are merely a human—what exactly is your background?" Tu Li’s voice was laced with dread.
"I will say this once more. I’ll count to three, and then you will get the hell out of here," Chen Mu said coldly.
This time, no one thought Chen Mu was just putting on a show. Everyone present believed that if Tu Li refused to leave, Chen Mu possessed the power to make him leave. The employees gathered around Chen Mu, looking at their boss with newfound reverence. Their boss was hiding his true strength, which turned out to be terrifyingly powerful. This revelation left the staff stunned and solidified their resolve to follow Chen Mu to the death.
Tu Li hesitated, unwilling to leave so easily. He looked Chen Mu up and down, harboring a glimmer of hope: perhaps Chen Mu only possessed strong defenses, but lacked actual offensive power?
However, Chen Mu’s next move completely shattered Tu Li’s courage. Chen Mu touched his ring and withdrew a palm-sized token. The token was pitch-black and coiled with dense, ominous ghostly energy—so thick that it manifested as a black mist. One only had to glance at it to be awestruck by the immense power concealed within.
Tu Li recognized it immediately: it was a supernatural token, and a General-level one at that. A General! That was a supreme entity capable of ruling an entire city. In the presence of a powerful General, Tu Li was nothing more than a clown; the General could crush him with the flick of a finger.
How could Chen Mu possibly possess a General’s token?
The tokens were incredibly rare and vital to a General. A General could only have one. When a General bestowed their token upon someone, it was a declaration to the world: this person is my sworn companion. To harm them was to declare war on the General! Effectively, anyone holding a General’s token possessed the authority to command one. If Chen Mu wished, he could crush the token to summon the General to fight for him.
What kind of transcendent existence was someone who could obtain such a token?
In that moment, Tu Li realized exactly what kind of entity he had provoked. Had he known about the token, he wouldn't have dared to provoke Chen Mu even if he were given a million lives. Even if Chen Mu had ordered him to kneel and lick his boots, Tu Li wouldn't have dared to utter a word of protest. A bully who relied on his own strength to prey on the weak, Tu Li was all the more terrified of those stronger than himself.
"Boss... Boss Chen, I’m leaving! I’m rolling out right now!" Tu Li didn't even dare to look at Chen Mu. The man who had been arrogant moments ago now knelt on the floor of the cafeteria and began to roll toward the exit. As he rolled, he whimpered, "Boss Chen, I see your floor is a bit dirty, let me help you wipe it with my body."
The contrast was so extreme that it left everyone’s jaws on the floor. The patrons watched Chen Mu in shock, unable to believe that a human could wield such power. He had withstood a Spectre’s punch, possessed a General’s token, and terrified a Spectre into submission. They had to admit that among all the humans they had encountered, none were as powerful as Chen Mu. They knew that once they left and spread the word, no one would ever dare to cause trouble at the Midnight Cafeteria again. In fact, after learning of his reputation, they would have to give him a wide berth or even serve him with the utmost care in the future.
But the most shocking scene was yet to come.
After Tu Li rolled (literally) out of the Midnight Cafeteria, he was gripped by mounting fear. As a supernatural entity, he knew exactly how powerful beings tortured the weak—he often did it himself, making his victims wish they were dead. If the General behind Chen Mu found out about this and came to settle the score, the thought of being tortured for eternity made Tu Li tremble uncontrollably.
He couldn't accept such a hellish fate. In a fit of desperate terror, he looked back at the cafeteria one last time, steeled his heart, and slammed his own head with a massive punch. With a dull thud, Tu Li dropped dead right in front of the Midnight Cafeteria. He had committed suicide, terrified that the General might come for him.
The sound of his collapse drew the attention of the other entities inside. When they rushed out, they were struck with pure, unadulterated shock. Tu Li had committed suicide. He had been scared to death by Chen Mu! A Spectre-level ghost, frightened into self-destruction by a human. It was an unprecedented, legendary event. Since the start of the supernatural apocalypse, such a thing had never occurred.
Even Chen Mu was stunned. *Holy crap, did I actually scare a ghost to death?*
This was truly unprecedented. In his previous life, having survived five years in the supernatural apocalypse, he had met many powerful humans, but he had never heard of anyone scaring a supernatural entity to death. He had set a record! From now on, everyone would know that Chen Mu was the man who scared a ghost into committing suicide.
Nearby, a few bold students watched the scene with curiosity. Since the doors of the Midnight Cafeteria were always open, some had witnessed the entire ordeal.
"Chen Mu? Isn't that the senior from the senior year?"
"I heard he bought the Midnight Cafeteria, but what’s going on? Did he just scare another ghost to death?"
Soon, as these students returned to their classrooms, the news of Chen Mu scaring a powerful entity to death began to spread throughout the school. Another legend of Chen Mu had been born.
