Chapter 111: Avalanche

Five Snow Mountain Snake Vultures swooped down from the sky. The leader, which was also the largest of them all, plunged straight toward Chu Feng, while the other four divided themselves between the others: two attacked Bai Naizhao, and one each went after Ayan and Aying.

At once, Chu Feng understood. These Snow Mountain Snake Vultures clearly possessed a certain intelligence; they knew how to distribute their strength, and their arrangement was entirely rational.

Screech!

The largest Snow Mountain Snake Vulture let out another piercing cry and dove toward the space above Chu Feng’s head with the force of Mount Tai bearing down upon him. Its hideously ugly snake head jerked upward, and its scimitar-like hooked beak opened. A jet of silvery-white liquid shot violently toward Chu Feng.

“So you chose me as your opponent? Your bird eyes must be blind!”

Chu Feng cursed inwardly. He flashed aside, avoiding the spray of silvery liquid, while his spearhead swayed and thrust toward the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture.

Unexpectedly, before he could fully release the force behind that thrust, the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture suddenly seemed to have encountered some terrifying presence. It flapped its wings wildly and fled, as though afraid it would not escape quickly enough.

“Hmm? Is it pretending to be frightened, trying to lure me deeper in?”

Chu Feng’s thoughts stirred. He neither grew angry nor gave chase, but simply stood where he was, spear held upright.

After flying away in apparent panic, the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture circled once in the sky before diving toward Ayan. It spat a mouthful of silvery-white liquid at her from afar, then turned and attacked Aying. In the end, it flew above Bai Naizhao and joined the other two Snow Mountain Snake Vultures in assaulting him.

Thus, Ayan and Aying each raised their swords and battled the vulture entangled with them, while Bai Naizhao faced three alone.

Chu Feng, meanwhile, had no vulture left to fight.

He discovered that the leading Snow Mountain Snake Vulture truly seemed to fear him. Its earlier flight had not been an act.

Surrounded by three enormous Snow Mountain Snake Vultures, each as large as a millstone, Bai Naizhao was unable to see clearly in every direction. Yet he still noticed that Chu Feng seemed intent on coming to his aid and immediately called out, “Chu Feng, your techniques are too powerful. Do not assist me, or you may trigger an avalanche! The three of us can kill these Snow Mountain Snake Vultures ourselves!”

“Very well!”

Chu Feng nodded and abandoned the thought of joining the battle.

Whether Bai Naizhao wanted to prove that he was fully capable of killing the Snow Mountain Snake Vultures, or whether he truly feared that Chu Feng’s techniques might cause an avalanche, since he had said so, Chu Feng would simply cooperate with him.

At present, the relationship between Chu Feng and Bai Naizhao was somewhat subtle.

In private matters, Bai Naizhao was deeply dissatisfied with Chu Feng because of the injury to the Cloud-Breaking Fang Carving. On top of that, there was the matter of the Flying Snow Horse Blazing Light losing its wings. Bai Naizhao’s resentment toward Chu Feng could hardly have been greater.

But in public matters, Chu Feng could not reach the Frost-Wu Snow Clan without Bai Naizhao as his guide. The journey was filled with danger, and Bai Naizhao likewise could not do without Chu Feng’s assistance. Chu Feng had just saved Ayan and Aying in succession, and both women were disciples under Bai Naizhao’s command. As their hall master, Bai Naizhao would have to owe Chu Feng a favor.

Clang!

Clang!

Ayan and Aying fought the Snow Mountain Snake Vultures with their swords. Their blades struck the creatures’ scales with ringing crashes, sending sparks flying in every direction. It was clear that the vultures’ armor was even harder than ordinary steel.

The two women had to attack the Snow Mountain Snake Vultures flying overhead while also guarding against the Shadowless Snow Serpents that might suddenly burst from the snow beneath their feet. The battle was exceedingly arduous.

Boom!

Boom!

Several yards away, Bai Naizhao’s renowned fierce palm technique, the Mountain-Pushing Palm, continued without pause. Every palm carried the force of thunder and possessed tremendous destructive power. Unfortunately, its range was limited; it was effective at close quarters but weak from a distance. The three Snow Mountain Snake Vultures darted and wheeled through the air, showing little fear of Bai Naizhao’s attacks.

Unable to bear watching idly, Chu Feng grew anxious. With palm strikes as fierce as Bai Naizhao’s, several of which had missed their targets, was he not afraid that one careless blow would trigger an avalanche?

Hiss!

Hiss!

Two sounds of flesh tearing rang out in succession. Ayan and Aying’s swords pierced the heads of two Snow Mountain Snake Vultures. With another burst of strength, the blades severed the heads completely. The two vultures flapped helplessly before crashing to the ground, dead.

Ayan and Aying were breathing slightly harder. Killing even one Snow Mountain Snake Vulture had been a formidable trial.

Boom!

One Snow Mountain Snake Vulture reacted half a beat too slowly and was struck in the back by Bai Naizhao’s palm. Its entire back collapsed beneath the impact. The force was so immense that the residual energy slammed into the mountainside, causing the snow beneath their feet to tremble.

Screech!

Seeing the vulture crushed beneath the heavy palm and left to die miserably on the ground, the leading Snow Mountain Snake Vulture let out a piercing cry that sounded filled with grief. Then it beat its wings and took flight, its two enormous scaled wings whipping furiously at the snow covering the mountainside.

The snow had been thick but relatively compact. Bai Naizhao’s palm strike had already shaken it loose, causing a vast sheet to begin sliding slowly downward. Now, as the wind from the vulture’s wings swept over it, enormous masses of snow began to roll down like a landslide.

The snow slid faster and faster, and more and more of it broke loose.

As the great sheets of snow descended, the ground beneath their feet began to shake visibly.

Ayan suddenly cried out, “This is bad! An avalanche!”

“The avalanche is coming! Do not worry about me—get out of here! Quickly!” Bai Naizhao shouted as he continued striking at the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture.

“Bai Naizhao, an avalanche has already started, and you are still fighting that Snow Mountain Snake Vulture?!”

With the situation growing critical, Chu Feng could not help shouting at him. But the moment the words left his mouth, an idea flashed through his mind.

He took a square object, shaped like a brick, from his hand and hurled it out.

Whoosh!

The square object instantly transformed into a millstone-sized construct. It was the puppet he had once lent to Lei Jianqin and the others—the Swiftstride Giant Crab.

“Ayan, Aying, get on!”

As he spoke, Chu Feng urged the Swiftstride Giant Crab into motion. Ayan and Aying were quick to react and immediately leapt onto its back. Chu Feng then drove the puppet swiftly toward Bai Naizhao.

“Bai Naizhao, stop at once and get on! Hurry!”

Chu Feng’s sharp command carried the authority of a marshal ordering a common soldier—an imposing force that demanded obedience and allowed no defiance.

At that very moment, the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture flying low and battling Bai Naizhao suddenly reacted as though it had seen a mouse appear before a great cat. Startled, it tried to beat its wings and flee, but its movements were strangely sluggish.

Without a word, Chu Feng thrust out with his spear.

Whoosh!

The Thunderclap Windbreaker Spear pierced straight through the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture’s scales. When Chu Feng withdrew it, a great quantity of silvery-white liquid poured out, and the vulture immediately plunged to the ground, dead.

The last remaining vulture—the leader—saw Chu Feng kill one of its kind with a single thrust and seemed to be stunned. It hovered foolishly in the air, neither attacking Chu Feng nor fleeing.

Chu Feng did not hesitate. He sprang upward.

That seemingly casual leap carried him more than twenty feet into the air. Together with the length of the Thunderclap Windbreaker Spear, it sent the spearhead plunging into the Snow Mountain Snake Vulture’s head with a sickening thud. The enormous spearhead shattered the creature’s skull.

When Chu Feng landed, the vulture’s corpse was still hanging from the tip of his spear. He exerted his strength once more, and the corpse was hurled far away, breaking into a mass of mangled remains.

In the space of only a few breaths, the snow covering the entire mountain before them—an endless white expanse—surged downward with the force of mountains and seas.

“Bai Naizhao! Are you getting on or not? We are leaving. You can bury yourself here if you like!” Chu Feng shouted as he immediately urged the Swiftstride Giant Crab forward.

Seeing Chu Feng kill two vultures with two consecutive thrusts, Bai Naizhao had actually been left momentarily stunned. Chu Feng’s thunderous reprimand brought him back to his senses at once.

“Wait for me!”

At the final moment, Bai Naizhao leapt onto the Swiftstride Giant Crab as well.

With a sharp hiss, the Swiftstride Giant Crab shot forward like an arrow loosed from a bow. The powerful current of air it generated blasted an enormous pit into the snow where it had stood.

The instant the pit formed, however, it was swallowed by the mountainous snow rushing down behind them. Snow from several peaks came rolling forward like a raging flood, resembling a gigantic maw opening wide to devour the Swiftstride Giant Crab ahead in a single bite.
