Chapter 13: Going Home with Yuan Feiye

Yuan Feiye’s words exploded in Sang Yao’s mind like a thunderclap.
“Stop joking around. Give me a serious answer!” The last shred of composure on Sang Yao’s face was close to cracking.
He stared fixedly at Yuan Feiye, disbelief filling his golden-brown eyes as he waited for Yuan Feiye to say it was not true.
Yuan Feiye ended the game, shut down the computer, and turned his chair to face Sang Yao directly. The disdain and speechlessness in his eyes sent Sang Yao’s heart plunging into an abyss.
“Sang Yao, you’re a beast,” Yuan Feiye said contemptuously.
“How was I supposed to know what drug she’d used on herself? It made my breakdown even worse.” Panic had begun to set in, and he hurriedly tried to defend himself.
The contempt on Yuan Feiye’s face deepened. “Are you saying your little niece seduced you?”
“That’s not what I meant. The drug was meant for that boy from the Lesterin family. But we’re both males, so I’d naturally react when I smelled it too...” He was already speaking without thinking.
“Stop shifting the blame, Sang Yao. You’re making me look down on you.” Yuan Feiye scrutinized him, arms folded and one leg crossed over the other, looking every inch the lecturer. “Are you saying she used the drug to seduce a male, and that it merely caused you to lose control when you smelled it? Her father was a doctor at the Federal Beastman Genetic Research Institute. Even after her father died, she still had a powerful and influential uncle like you. Why would she need to seduce another male? The purpose of a defective female seducing a male is nothing more than survival and escaping her social class, isn’t it? That only proves you must have treated her badly in the past. And you’re her guardian. Even if she did use the drug to seduce a male, a large part of the reason would still be your dereliction of duty.”
Yuan Feiye had exposed the truth at its very root, and his words nearly nailed Sang Yao to the pillar of shame.
But after his elder brother’s death, Sang Yao had clearly done his best to take good care of Yingying. It was simply that Yingying had never accepted him as her uncle.
Or rather, she had disliked him even when her father was still alive.
At last, Sang Yao lowered his head. “Yes. It was my failure. Thank you for today. I’ll apologize to her tomorrow. I’m going to change clothes now, so please leave.”
Yuan Feiye sighed dramatically. “You have everything I have. Are you afraid I’ll covet you?”
“Please leave anyway. I’ll come to your home tomorrow to thank you in person,” Sang Yao replied with unfailing courtesy.
“Then let me be direct. My relationship with your elder brother was much closer than my relationship with you. Seeing your little niece staying with an old predator like you makes even me worry for her. Yesterday, you said you could give me custody of her. I accept. Let her come home with me. That way, the two of you won’t have to feel awkward around each other.”
Sang Yao gave a derisive laugh. “Former Commander, you’re not exactly known for your warm heart.”
The implication was clear: Who knew what scheme Yuan Feiye was really plotting?

Yuan Feiye raised an eyebrow as though nothing were amiss. “Am I not? I think I’ve always been happy to help others.”
“Ask her whether she’s willing to go with you.”
If she did not want to stay with him, then there was indeed no reason to force her. Keeping her here would only make them both uncomfortable, and she would not be happy either.
“All right. I’ll go ask her. Take your time changing.” Yuan Feiye rose to his feet.
In the bedroom, Sang Fuying curled up beneath the blankets, too embarrassed to sleep. She tossed and turned restlessly.
When someone knocked on her bedroom door, her heart leaped straight into her throat.
Was it her uncle coming to see her?
After hesitating for a long while, she cautiously climbed out of bed and opened the door. When she saw who was standing outside, her heart quickly sank again.
“Brother Yuan, what do you need me for?”
“Your uncle isn’t in a good state lately. It isn’t safe for you to continue living with him. Pack some clothes and come home with me for now. That’s what your uncle said.”
Sang Fuying hesitated. “Do I really have to go with you?”
As far as she was concerned, Yuan Feiye was still practically a stranger whom she had met only twice. She did not think it was appropriate to simply go home with a stranger.
“More or less. You’ve seen your uncle’s condition yourself. He’s too ashamed to face you at the moment. I don’t live at the family residence; it’s just me at home. I also have to work with your uncle during the day, so you’ll be perfectly safe at my place. What do you want to bring? I’ll help you pack.”
He had already slipped past the girl standing in the doorway and entered her bedroom.
The fragrance inside was several times stronger than the one in Sang Yao’s room.
It did not smell like perfume or medicine at all. Rather, it seemed to be a sweet scent radiating from her very bones and muscles, a sweetness slowly cultivated over years.
“Little Bu, should I go home with him?” Unable to make up her mind, Sang Fuying prodded Little Bu.
Little Bu said, “I think you should. He’s a good person. He’s already saved you from danger twice. Besides, if you stay here, there’s not only the danger that fox-man mentioned, but it’ll be awkward too.”

As a system, even Little Bu felt embarrassed just thinking about what had happened.
“Then I’ll stay with him for a few days?” Since Little Bu had said so, she stopped worrying.
Little Bu replied, “Sounds good.”
In the bedroom, Yuan Feiye stood staring blankly at the wardrobe, which was crammed full of dresses.
Did she really like pretty dresses that much?
Sang Fuying stepped over and blocked the wardrobe. “Thank you, but I can do it myself.”
Yuan Feiye courteously stepped back, maintaining a proper distance from her. “Then I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
Sang Fuying selected several more practical everyday outfits, packed them into a suitcase, and went downstairs with Mica dragging the luggage behind her. When they passed Sang Yao’s bedroom, the door was tightly shut.
She felt too embarrassed to disturb him, so she sent him a message through her wrist terminal, telling him that she was going home with Yuan Feiye.
Yuan Feiye’s home was far more luxurious than Sang Yao’s. He lived alone on an entire estate.
After disembarking from the flyer, she quietly stayed by Yuan Feiye’s side, looking around with open curiosity.
Many of the flowers and plants here were ones she had never seen before. There were even glowing flowers along the roadside.
When Yuan Feiye saw that she did not seem overly nervous, he secretly relaxed.
He arranged for Sang Fuying to stay on the floor above his own. She could arrange the rooms on the entire floor however she pleased.
