Chapter 18: The Pitiful Survivor

And so the simulation began.
This time, Liu Yang began actively searching the entire residential compound.
There were forty-five villas and ten high-rise apartment buildings in the compound.
The forty-five villas were spacious and sparsely populated, so there would not be many survivors—or many zombies.
The ten high-rise buildings, however, housed at least several hundred families, with no fewer than a thousand residents in total.
At least seven hundred of them would have turned into zombies.
Even among the rest, who might still be alive, many had probably already been eaten by zombies.
The odds of becoming a zombie after contracting the virus were simply too high—more than two-thirds.
In other words, in a family of three, two people might turn into zombies. The remaining person might stay normal, but could one ordinary person possibly fight two zombies alone?
The ultimate result would only be being eaten alive.
Therefore, there were probably very few survivors in the high-rise buildings.
Liu Yang consequently made the villa district his primary target.
Each villa had four floors.
Even if two members of a family of three had turned into zombies, as long as they were not on the same floor, the people upstairs would not necessarily be eaten. The chances of survivors being present were therefore much higher.
Thus, Liu Yang decided to search out the survivors in the villa district first. Then he would lock the entrances to the high-rise buildings and trap all the zombies inside until they died.
Liu Yang began searching the first villa.
This simulation was not intended to rescue anyone immediately. He merely wanted to determine which villas contained survivors and which contained zombies, recording everything in advance. That way, when he took action for real, he would know exactly where to go and could work far more efficiently.
There was no one inside the first villa.
The front door stood wide open. Clearly, it had either not been locked when the apocalypse began, or the survivors inside had opened it and fled after the zombie outbreak.
The villa was completely empty.
There were no zombies, no survivors, and no food. There was nothing at all.
Liu Yang arrived at the second villa.
Inside were two zombies, along with a corpse on the floor that had been gnawed nearly beyond recognition.
Obviously, the villa had originally been home to a family of three. Two of them had turned into zombies, and the remaining person had been eaten by them.
The corpse appeared to belong to a little girl.
Most likely, her parents had become zombies while she had remained human, only to be brutally devoured by them in the end.
Even Liu Yang was moved by the sight.
Parents were supposed to love and protect their children more than anyone else. Yet once they became zombies, they lost every trace of humanity—even their own child was not spared their teeth.
The virus was truly capable of turning people into monsters devoid of thought and feeling.

The moment they were infected with the virus, they were already dead.
Liu Yang raised his fire axe and hacked the male and female zombies to death, freeing them from their torment.
Then he moved on to the next villa.
The third villa contained neither survivors nor zombies.
Liu Yang then inspected the fourth.
There were no zombies or survivors there either.
However, on his way to the fifth villa, he encountered two zombies.
Without hesitation, Liu Yang used ice needles to kill them.
He had no desire to engage in close combat with zombies now. The noise might attract others.
The fifth villa contained no survivors. Liu Yang immediately proceeded to the sixth.
The front door of the sixth villa was tightly shut, clearly bolted from the inside.
This caught Liu Yang’s attention. With a single vault, he climbed over the three-meter-high wall and dropped into the grounds.
The moment he entered, he caught the heavy scent of blood.
It was the smell of fresh human blood, entirely different from the stench of zombies.
Liu Yang frowned.
Could there still be zombies inside?
Had they just eaten someone?
He continued farther in.
The corpses of a man and a woman lay before him—both zombies. Their heads had been smashed flat, apparently with a blunt weapon. The blood on their heads had already dried, making it obvious that they had been dead for a long time. They had probably been killed at the very beginning of the apocalypse.
Liu Yang continued onward and noticed movement coming from the kitchen. He approached slowly.
When he looked inside, the scene immediately stunned him.
Two men were hacking wildly at a woman’s leg with kitchen cleavers.
The woman was pinned to the floor, her hands and feet bound. Blood covered the ground beneath her, and all she could do was let out faint cries for help.
They were actually cutting into a living person’s leg?
The brutality of it shocked even Liu Yang, a man known for his ruthlessness.
The woman shook her head desperately and pleaded with them.
“Help me! Help me! Don’t kill me! Aah! It hurts! My leg hurts so much! Don’t cut me! I’ve done everything you asked these past few days! Why are you treating me like this?!”
The two young men wore crazed expressions.
“Shut up! Just endure it—it’ll be over soon! What a fine leg! Plump but not greasy, long and straight, with skin so tender it looks like it would break at a touch! It’s fun to play with, and it tastes good too!”

“You’ve been using up so much of our energy for all these days. Isn’t it time you gave something back to us?”
“Exactly! If we don’t eat something soon, we’ll starve to death! Since you’re my woman, then offer your flesh to us now!”
The man ranted madly, then raised the kitchen cleaver high and brought it down.
Crack!
At last, the woman’s leg was severed.
Blood sprayed several meters from the artery in her thigh.
“Aah!” the woman screamed.
Unable to bear the sight any longer, Liu Yang stepped forward with his fire axe in hand.
“Hey, what do you think you’re doing? Even if you intend to eat her, couldn’t you kill her first? This is a little too cruel.”
Hearing Liu Yang’s voice, the two men were startled. They quickly turned around and stared at him warily.
One of them spoke.
“You... When did you get in here? You’re the security guard at the entrance—and Liu Yang, a student at our school, aren’t you?”
The other man’s face twisted viciously.
“Kid, I advise you to mind your own business and get lost. Otherwise, we’ll take you out too! Don’t think that just because we went to the same school, we’ll show you any mercy!”
“Oh? You’re going to take me out too? You two sound pretty impressive.” Liu Yang narrowed his eyes, his gaze cold as ice. “I remember you now. You’re the rich heirs from Class Three, Li Zihao and Zhou Zixuan, aren’t you?”
Li Zihao seemed to sense the murderous intent in Liu Yang’s expression.
The vicious look he had worn only moments earlier gave way to fear.
Zhou Zixuan hurriedly said, “Liu Yang, we all went to the same school. We’re classmates. Harmony brings prosperity, right? How about we give you a share?”
As he spoke, he pointed toward the girl lying on the floor, barely alive.
In his eyes, she had once been his woman. Now she was merely food.
He had never regarded those women as girlfriends in the first place.
They were nothing more than playthings.
Originally, three men and three women had been holding a group party in the villa.
When the apocalypse arrived, one man and two women turned into zombies.
They had barely managed to kill the zombies, but then found themselves without any food—and too frightened to go outside in search of more.
In the end, they had been forced to turn the weakest woman into food.
Now that Liu Yang had discovered what they were doing, and threats had failed, they planned to offer him a portion in order to send the little security guard away.
After all, they had been starving for several days and were extremely weak.
Liu Yang, by contrast, looked refreshed and strong. They believed that even the two of them together would not be a match for him.
