Chapter 34: Have the Awakened Found Us?

The two of them searched through the supermarket together. Along the way, Liu Yang hacked several straggling zombies to death.
With the boost from this treasured blade, killing zombies had become an absolute pleasure for Liu Yang. For the zombies, of course, it was nothing short of a catastrophe.
At Liu Yang’s speed, the zombies’ movements appeared almost slow-motion to him. Before they could even get close, they were cut in two by a single stroke.
The smoothness of it was like slicing tofu—deeply satisfying.
Liu Yang would have gladly traded half of all the resources he currently possessed for this sword!
At the same time, his determination to test himself at the stone stele grew even stronger.
Zhang Jingyu’s brother had received such a powerful treasured blade after just one test. If Liu Yang went through the test himself, might he receive an even better reward?
The thought filled Liu Yang with anticipation.
After searching the supermarket for half an hour, the two finally found the storehouse hidden in a rear passage.
The supermarket warehouse contained an enormous amount of supplies. It was divided into the clothing warehouse, the fresh-produce warehouse, the food warehouse, and the frozen-storage facility.
The clothing warehouse held all kinds of men’s and women’s clothing, along with every kind of underwear, pajamas, and swimwear imaginable. Liu Yang swept it all into his darkness without hesitation.
The fresh-produce warehouse was filled with countless fruits and vegetables.
He took all of those as well.
What excited Liu Yang most, however, was the food warehouse. Bags of rice were stacked in neat rows, with at least a thousand bags filling the storehouse.
Each bag weighed one hundred jin. A thousand bags made one hundred thousand jin—
a full fifty tons!
Fifty tons of grain would be enough to feed him, Su Xiao, and the others for at least ten years!
And that was not even counting the soybeans, mung beans, and all the other legumes. Taken together, the various beans amounted to at least several dozen more tons.
“We’ve struck it rich! We’ve struck it rich! With this many resources, I could support an entire base of survivors!”
Excitement spread across Liu Yang’s face.
In the apocalypse, food was the most important thing of all!
And this was only a single large supermarket.
If he plundered several more large supermarkets, could he not stockpile thousands of tons of grain?
Food was capital.
It was the most crucial foundation for developing his power in the apocalypse.

It was no exaggeration to say that, in the apocalypse after the zombie outbreak, one hundred jin of grain would be enough to trade for ten beautiful young women!
And if all ten of those women succeeded in bearing him children, the rewards he received would be something not even ten tons of grain could buy!
That was how resources could be converted and multiplied explosively.
Liu Yang began excitedly moving everything into his darkness.
As he watched his dark space grow fuller and fuller, now occupying one-fifth of its total area, he was filled with delight.
……
However.
Outside the supermarket, beside the mutated tree Liu Yang had felled earlier, more than a dozen people had appeared.
They were travel-worn and vicious, with murderous expressions and eyes full of brutality. At a glance, none of them seemed like decent people.
“This appears to be a mutated tree. The cut is smooth—severed in a single stroke. It should have been done by that fellow.”
One of them had an enormous nose with a bright-red tip. He kept sniffing, as though filtering the scents from the air.
“This blood belongs to him. He lost a great deal of it, so his battle with the mutated tree must have been difficult. He should be seriously injured by now. That’s advantageous for us!”
Following the trail of blood, he continued sniffing and inhaling deeply.
After several attempts, he turned to a burly man over six feet three, built like a black bear, and said, “Big Brother Giant Bear, that fellow is hiding over there!”
Following his directions, the group came to a mound of earth.
They stared at it, exchanging bewildered looks.
Yellow Dog nodded and said quietly, “According to the scent, he’s in there!”
The burly man’s expression turned solemn. Why was that fellow hiding in the mud?
Even so, he ordered his men to start digging.
Before long, the body of Zhang Jingyu’s brother was unearthed.
“He’s dead?” Shock appeared on the burly man’s rough face.
Zhang Jinglin’s strength had ranked among the best even within the Black Tiger Survivor Base. He was at least one of the top three fighters there. Who would have thought he had actually died at the hands of the mutated tree?
Another man searched Zhang Jinglin’s body. “Where did his sword go? That was a fine blade. I’ve coveted it for ages!”
“His sister probably took it,” said another man with a scarred face. “Could she have buried him here? That doesn’t make sense. Zhang Jinglin was an ability user, yet he died here. His sister is only an ordinary person—how could she possibly have escaped?”
“He probably died protecting his sister. Otherwise, with his strength, saving himself shouldn’t have been difficult,” another man said.
“That’s even better! Zhang Jinglin is dead and Zhang Jingyu has escaped. As long as we capture Zhang Jingyu, we can complete our assignment without having to fight a difficult battle.”
Yellow Dog spoke casually.
“I hope Zhang Jingyu is still alive. Boss Black Tiger personally ordered us to bring her back,” the burly man said worriedly.
With Zhang Jinglin dead, Zhang Jingyu no longer had any means of protecting herself. It was entirely possible that the zombies had already killed her.
If Zhang Jingyu really had been killed by zombies, they would have no way to answer to Black Tiger.
The burly man turned to the red-nosed man beside him.
“Yellow Dog, hurry up and track down Zhang Jingyu’s location!”
“I know, I know. Don’t rush me. I’m sniffing—sniff, sniff!”
Yellow Dog drew in several powerful breaths, and his expression suddenly became grave.
“There’s a strong scent of seawater… Besides Zhang Jingyu, another man has been here. Sniff… No, it seems like a woman—or perhaps that man carries the scent of another woman?”
A puzzled look appeared on Yellow Dog’s face.
“Who cares whether it’s a man or a woman? Just find them. Kill the man immediately. As for the woman, we’ll all have our fun first, then kill her!”
The burly man spoke impatiently.
He was in complete command of this operation and did not want any complications. All he wanted was to find Zhang Jingyu and take her back to Black Tiger as quickly as possible.
“All right. They went that way!”
Yellow Dog followed the scent.
At last, the group reached the entrance of the supermarket.
“They went inside,” Yellow Dog said, pointing toward the doors.
“Good. We’re going in too. Yellow Dog, take the lead. Scarface Rat, stay at the rear and keep watch for anything inside. Everyone else, follow me!”
The burly man issued his orders.
“Yes, Big Brother Giant Bear.”
The others nodded one after another.
Yellow Dog walked alone at the very front. The moment he entered the supermarket, the stench of blood flooded his nostrils—the smell of zombie blood.
Then he saw the scene before him and was struck by both surprise and fear.
The supermarket was littered with dead zombies, and every single one had been cleaved in two by a single stroke.
Yellow Dog could not help drawing a sharp breath.
“This style looks very much like Zhang Jinglin’s attacks… But wasn’t that man already dead?”
Giant Bear frowned.
“No. There’s another expert here! Someone must have obtained Zhang Jinglin’s sword, brought his sister Zhang Jingyu to the supermarket, and killed hundreds of zombies! This person may be even stronger than Zhang Jinglin. Everyone, be careful!”
