Chapter Thirty-Five: Already Inseparable
Ace seemed to be in a dire state. His body was ice-cold, yet his breath scorched her sensitive skin.
He let out a soft chuckle, as if a fragment of his reason had returned. "Who said I was going to eat you?"
Suddenly, he sensed something. His psychic power, teetering on the edge of collapse, instinctively braced against a sudden assault. A sharp pain pierced his mind. Forced, he loosened his grip on Lu Meng.
It was the psychic energy of that cursed hound! Did he really give her his companion chip? What a fool in love!
Caught off guard by being released, Lu Meng didn't react immediately. When she finally did, her instinct was to run, but the memory of her previous mistake made her hesitate to act rashly.
She met Ace’s gaze and spoke cautiously, "Are... are you alright?"
Ace looked a bit more lucid than before. He curled his lips. "I'm fine. Go, little Guide. Don't mention that you met me today, or else..." His voice took on a dangerous edge. "I can't guarantee what I might do to you."
He stepped back twice, though his eyes remained fixed on her. "Go. Just don't let me catch you again."
Lu Meng was stunned for a moment. Her mind raced, and once she was certain he wasn't joking, she turned and bolted. She didn't even bother to retrieve the items she had dropped. She sprinted as if her life depended on it, only stopping when she was certain he hadn't pursued her, panting and still rattled.
Her mind was flooded with a persistent beeping—a call request from Wen Er. She quickly answered, a sob catching in her throat. "Wen Er..."
Wen Er sensed the distress in her voice, and his heart tightened. "I'm here. Don't be afraid. I'll be at your location in a moment."
Lu Meng pursed her lips. "Okay..."
Wen Er arrived quickly; within seconds of her speaking, she heard his voice. "Mengmeng!"
Lu Meng had been crouching on the ground, but she stood up the moment she heard him. Under the dim streetlamp directly ahead, Wen Er, clad in his black military uniform, was running toward her. Their call was still connected. She heard his voice both in her mind and through the air.
Before Wen Er could react, Lu Meng collided with his chest. The first thing that drifted toward him was a fragrance—light, delicate, and reminiscent of a flower. It was also deeply familiar. Then came the girl’s small, soft frame, her arms winding tightly around his waist.
He froze instantly, a ripple of tenderness washing over him. Feeling her absolute trust, he awkwardly patted her head. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
Lu Meng buried her face in his chest, her voice muffled as she replied, "Mm..."
Wen Er’s heart felt as soft as silk.
"Captain!"
Adi stood there, an ice cream hanging from his mouth, his belongings scattered on the ground. Heavens! What was he witnessing? The Captain was hugging a girl in the middle of the street?!
Wen Er frowned when he saw him. Did the man have a tracker on him? How was he everywhere he went?
Hearing the voice, Lu Meng poked her head out from Wen Er’s arms. When Adi saw her, the ice cream dropped from his mouth, his eyes widening. "It’s you!"
Lu Meng stepped out of Wen Er’s embrace, feeling a belated sense of shyness. Wen Er felt a pang of disappointment but kept his composure.
Hearing Adi's exclamation, Lu Meng couldn't help but ask, "You know me?"
Adi glanced at his Captain, and seeing no objection, he smiled at her. "Of course! Our Captain was the one who saved you back then. He carried you out of that pit; we all have such a deep impression of you!"
Adi described the scene vividly. He just hadn't expected that she and the Captain would be... this made the impression even deeper! So, she was the Guide the Captain liked! He had to admit, the Captain lived up to his reputation—his taste was impeccable, and he moved fast! His decisiveness was truly something else! She had barely been at the military base for a few days, and look at them—already inseparable!
