Chapter 4: Acting as a Military District Guide?
Elt pushed open the door to the hospital room, a bouquet of fresh flowers in his arms.
He wore a gentle smile. Perhaps because he was the first person to smile at her after she opened her eyes, Lu Meng felt a natural sense of affinity toward him.
Elt walked over and handed her the flowers. "Guide Lu, congratulations. You will be discharged from the hospital soon."
It was the first time someone had ever given Lu Meng flowers, and she hadn't seen such beautiful blossoms in a very long time.
The place she had transmigrated from had long been overrun by zombies, and most of the vegetation had been contaminated. In the base, fresh flowers were an extreme luxury. Whatever points people earned were barely enough to trade for food.
She accepted the flowers and thanked him from the bottom of her heart.
Elt sat down by her bedside. "After you are discharged, have you thought about where you want to go?"
Lu Meng shook her head, looking a bit lost. "No. I’m not very familiar with this place, and I don’t know where I can go."
"Logically speaking," Elt said, "you are eligible to enter the White Tower. You would be very safe there."
Lu Meng’s heart tightened. Before she could voice her refusal, Elt pivoted. "But we submitted an application to the White Tower, and no one has reached out to us."
It meant the White Tower was unwilling to accept her, likely because she lacked mental power.
To Lu Meng’s surprise, she felt a profound sense of relief. In her past life, she had been confined to the base; if she were forced into the same situation in this life, she would have been miserable.
The White Tower, the White Tower... It didn't sound like a good place at all.
Elt fell silent after speaking, quietly observing Lu Meng’s reaction. Finding no trace of disappointment on her face, he continued.
"If you are all by yourself on the outside, it is very dangerous. My thought is this: since we were the ones who brought you back, we should be responsible for you until the end."
Elt paused, meeting Lu Meng’s clear eyes, and for some reason, a sense of guilt welled up within him. He was indeed acting in her best interest, but he also had his own selfish motives.
Lu Meng’s eyes brightened. "How will you be responsible?"
He seemed reliable enough. Having just transmigrated, it would be wonderful to find a decent place to transition into this new life.
Elt cleared his throat. "It’s like this: our military district is currently recruiting guides. If you don't have anywhere to go, you could stay at the military base for the time being."
Lu Meng was tempted. A guide in the military district—that sounded like a stable, lifelong job. Plus, it was the military; the discipline would be strict, and there would be no need to worry about danger.
Reliable!
However... Lu Meng blinked. "What are the working hours?"
Surely it wouldn't be too exhausting?
"For guides, it’s a 24-hour work week. But if there are no Sentinels in need of purification, you can rest the entire time," Elt explained, feeling a bit sheepish.
The workload at the military district was indeed quite heavy. He hoped she wouldn't find it too tiring and refuse to stay.
Lu Meng’s eyes widened. "!!!"
What?!
She grabbed Elt’s arm, her expression as resolute as if she were taking a solemn oath. "I'm willing!"
For someone who was used to working 24 hours a day without any breaks, this was practically paradise.
Elt was stunned. "Right, right, right. As long as you’re willing, that’s good."
Realizing she had been a bit too excited, Lu Meng quickly and carefully let go of his arm, flashing him a wide smile.
Then, she remembered something. "But I don't have any mental power. Can I still join?"
Elt didn't mind her previous outburst and smiled. "Yes, I am aware of your situation. Once you join the military district, you can handle the purification of Sentinels with low contamination levels."
As if to reassure her, he added, "There will be people to guide you when the time comes, so don't worry."
"That’s fine, then," Lu Meng said. "I was just afraid that without mental power, I wouldn't be able to perform any purifications."
She didn't want to get kicked out.
Elt looked at her, hesitated for a moment, and then told her the truth.
"Actually, you likely do possess mental power; it just hasn't been developed yet. When the time comes, I can study your condition and see if I can help you unlock it."
She had mental power, but it was just undeveloped?
Lu Meng couldn't help but feel puzzled. She had realized over the past two days that she had transmigrated in her original body. Could her original body possess mental power?
However, she was originally a healing-type ability user. Did her abilities have any connection to mental power?
Moreover, she had experimented over the last two days; her abilities were still there, though they seemed a bit weak.
The vine bracelet that usually wrapped around her wrist now looked like a withered branch.
