Chapter Fourteen: Help!! There's a Snake!!

Stop overthinking and just go back first!
Lu Meng opened the hand-drawn map Wen’er had sent her and followed its directions toward the apartment.
The path was quiet, flanked by lush trees casting dappled shadows on the ground.
A cool breeze swept past, and Lu Meng felt an unexpected sense of ease and contentment.
Living in a place like this—even with a low salary—was something she could accept.
Fresh air, a pristine environment, a comfortable temperature.
Life was truly wonderful! Freedom was truly wonderful!
This was exactly what she had longed for in her past life.
She had been an orphan since childhood, growing up in an orphanage until she was fourteen, when the zombie outbreak suddenly struck.
Everyone in the orphanage was infected and died.
She wasn’t one of the fortunate survivors either; she had been bitten. But then she awakened with supernatural abilities—specifically, healing powers.
So even though the zombies had mauled her beyond recognition, she eventually recovered fully.
Later, she was recruited into a secure base composed of other supernatural beings, becoming the resident healer, tending to injured individuals like herself.
Perhaps to keep her safe, or for other reasons, she was confined within the base most of the time. She only saw others when treating them; otherwise, she was alone.
She lived like that for four years.
Until a few days ago, when she mysteriously arrived on this planet and finally left that life behind.
Lu Meng wasn’t in any hurry to return.

It was still early.
She walked leisurely, as if on a casual stroll.
Suddenly, she vaguely noticed something by the roadside.
It seemed to lock eyes with her for a moment.
Just as she moved closer to get a better look, the thing suddenly darted swiftly in her direction.
Only then did Lu Meng realize it was a snake!
“Ah!!!”
She screamed and bolted at full speed.
“Help!!! Ah!!! Help!! There’s a snake!!”
She ran and shouted, glancing back.
The snake slithered unnaturally fast beside her, its crimson eyes fixed unblinkingly on her.
Lu Meng was so terrified she nearly fainted.
In that moment of despair, she suddenly saw someone approaching—a lifeline grasped at last.
She sprinted the last hundred meters, leapt onto him, and clung tightly, “Help me, please!”
She was so frightened that she didn’t even notice the man stiffen under her embrace.
The black little snake tilted its head, looking at her, then at the man she clung to, and seemed to want to imitate her by climbing onto him.
Ace looked at it coldly. Feeling guilty, it stuck out its tongue and immediately stopped in place.

It wasn’t doing it on purpose; it just thought she was cute and wanted to play.
Who knew she’d be so terrified...
Ace felt the warm touch pressed against his cold body, which even made him feel a faint heat.
So warm.
Lu Meng was dumbfounded with fear, clutching him tightly, her head buried in the hollow of his neck, legs wrapped around his lean waist, her body still trembling.
Ace felt as if a clingy raccoon had latched onto him; his hands rose but stayed still on either side. From her trembling frame, he could sense her fear.
So timid.
Like a little rabbit.
Ace coldly watched his disobedient spiritual form; reluctantly, it twisted and finally returned to his body.
Once it disappeared, Ace spoke, “It’s gone now. You can get down.”
Lu Meng heard his words, paused quietly for a moment, then cautiously lifted her head, revealing a pair of reddened, tearful eyes.
“Really?”
“Mm.”
Lu Meng swallowed hard, finally mustering the courage to glance back and saw that the snake had indeed vanished. She finally exhaled in relief.
Turning back, she suddenly met a pair of red eyes.
Still clutching his neck, their faces so close that their noses nearly touched, their breaths mingling.
