Chapter 122: A Hero's Sacrifice for a Beauty
Being called handsome by a woman is undoubtedly something to take pride in, especially when it comes from a top-tier beauty of fairy-like stature. Yet, when such words come from a career-driven beauty, they carry a peculiar undertone.
If he truly were handsome, it would mean the speaker harbored some unusual sentiment toward him. But as for Bai Jing falling for him, Lin Yang would never believe it. He certainly didn’t think he possessed a face that could captivate everyone or wreak havoc on beauties.
Regardless, receiving praise from a woman was always a reason to be proud. Lin Yang, unfamiliar with modesty, put on a cheeky grin and shamelessly accepted the compliment. “Yeah, little brother really is handsome,” he joked.
Jokes aside, Lin Yang never took things lightly. The three police cars that had vanished from the streets were swiftly caught up to by his daring driving skills. Part of the credit went to his newly purchased BMW, which naturally outperformed the police cars by a wide margin.
Upon catching up to the police vehicles, Lin Yang glanced ahead and scanned the surroundings. His face immediately darkened; he was clearly agitated.
Anyone with half a brain could see the three police cars were not heading toward the police bureau. Lin Yang had never expected them to take the five captives to the Tianchen District branch for interrogation. Yet, their direction didn’t even point toward Xicheng District. If Lin Yang couldn’t discern something from this, then he might as well have his head squeezed by a door or be rammed by a pig.
Bai Jing, with equally sharp eyesight, was well aware of the routes leading to Xicheng District. When they caught up to the police cars, she also took note of the surroundings. Sensing Lin Yang’s unusual mood, she turned to him and whispered, “What do you think they’re up to?”
Lin Yang shook his head helplessly. He wanted to know what the Fang family was planning, but to avoid drawing their attention, he deliberately kept his BMW at a distance from the three police cars up front. This way, he couldn’t see clearly inside their vehicles, and given his current abilities, he still couldn’t spot anything beyond thirty meters with the naked eye.
They tailed the police cars until they entered an abandoned factory in the East District. Only then did they stop discreetly by the roadside, unwilling to blindly barge into the desolate factory. If it were a trap, they would be walking right into a snare.
Judging by the environment and the overgrown weeds, Lin Yang estimated the factory had been deserted for at least five years. What puzzled him was why the Fang family would choose such a place. Simply detaining five people there made no sense. The police wouldn’t normally bring suspects to an isolated, deserted spot instead of the bureau. Rationally and legally, it was indefensible—especially since these were law enforcement officers themselves, blatantly breaking the law.
“Jing, what do you think?” Lin Yang asked, eyeing the grim surroundings and the methods at play. He vaguely suspected a possibility—one that could nearly destroy the Bai family.
Bai Jing wasn’t foolish. After all that had transpired and the Fang family’s strange behavior, if she couldn’t piece things together, she truly would be a fool.
“This isn’t good,” Bai Jing exclaimed nervously. Lin Yang’s hint had triggered a realization she had suspected earlier. Now she could be certain: the Fang family was probably trying to extract the secret formula of the “Heavenly Beauty Capsule” from the five experts. After all, the Fang family had engaged in such sinister acts before. No wonder Bai Jing was so alarmed.
If Bai Jing could guess this, Lin Yang had been pondering it during the drive.
Half an hour had passed, yet there was still no word from Zhu Yun Yun’s side. Bai Jing’s worries grew heavier.
Just then, her phone rang in her pocket. Fearful of alerting the Fang family inside the abandoned factory, Bai Jing hurriedly covered her pocket, then cautiously answered. The screen displayed Zhu Yun Yun’s name—the very person she had been anxiously awaiting.
“Yun Yun, how’s it going? Is your uncle willing to act?” Bai Jing whispered, afraid that Zhu Yun Yun’s father, the city party secretary, might worry about causing trouble. From one angle, the party secretary had no clear reason to help her other than through Zhu Yun Yun, who served as a bridge between them.
But Bai Jing had clearly underestimated the party secretary’s determination to root out the Fang family, a disruptive force wreaking havoc in Jinhai City. When his daughter told him about this rare opportunity, he was thrilled. He issued a private arrest warrant without any official report. Fang Tianpeng, the police commissioner, was abusing his power—a charge that might not be enough to bring him down legally, but it provided a reasonable excuse to take action against him.
“No, my father agreed. By the way, where are you now? He said he’s coming over immediately. After all, everything depends on evidence. What proof do you have where you are?” Zhu Yun Yun asked excitedly.
Although she had never been praised by her father for political work, this time, helping him make a decisive move against the Fang family gave her a chance to accelerate her father’s plan to truly control Jinhai. How could she not be excited?
Moreover, at her father’s behest, she had recently joined the city party leadership. Though still low-ranking, she was confident she would rise and become her father’s trusted aide in Jinhai.
“Evidence?”
The word made Bai Jing’s head ache. The Fang family dared to storm into Baifu Pharmaceuticals’ headquarters with the police commissioner’s signed warrant. As for her, everything was mere speculation without solid evidence. She couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed.
After all, actions must be backed by proof, especially when using legal means to defend one’s rights.
Just as she fretted, Lin Yang shook his head and muttered, “Isn’t this it?” He pointed toward the scene where the five experts were being secretly taken into the abandoned factory.
Even if the Fang family had an arrest warrant, bringing the captives to a deserted factory far from any shop or village was blatant misconduct. Setting aside the conspiracy, this alone was legally indefensible.
Upon Lin Yang’s reminder, Bai Jing’s furrowed brow finally relaxed somewhat. She quickly reported the scene they had witnessed to Zhu Yun Yun.
Since Zhu Yun Yun was on speakerphone in her study, her father, Secretary Zhu, overheard everything.
Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed through the speaker, followed by an angry roar from a mature man.
“This is lawlessness, utter lawlessness! The Fang family is trying to turn the world upside down—arrogant, overbearing, too arrogant and overbearing. They must be stopped.”
Without a doubt, it was the party secretary’s voice. Hearing that the Fang family was abusing their power so brazenly had clearly enraged him.
“Dad, calm down. No matter what, you have to keep a clear head. Anger blinds one with hatred,” Zhu Yun Yun urged anxiously as her father pounded the table and gasped for breath.
“It’s nothing,” Secretary Zhu said with the composure of a seasoned official. After instructing Lin Yang and Bai Jing to gather more concrete evidence, he ended the call and mobilized forces to rush to the abandoned factory. He intended to teach the arrogant Fang family a harsh lesson. Of course, capturing them all would be ideal—but the Fang family’s political ties in Jiangning were not something he could tackle alone.
Zhu Yun Yun had only revealed Tang Yixue’s background to her father. Secretary Zhu was unaware of Lin Yang’s formidable identity. But with Tang Yixue’s status, it was enough—this was why Secretary Zhu now dared to take such bold action against the Fang family.
Neither Lin Yang nor Bai Jing was naive. They clearly heard Secretary Zhu’s cautious reminder at the end. Yet with the Fang family holed up inside the factory, what was happening inside remained beyond their knowledge.
Gathering sufficient evidence without risking a direct confrontation was incredibly difficult. After all, the Fang family were no fools; they wouldn’t leave any clues for their adversaries.
As Bai Jing agonized over the dilemma, Lin Yang boldly volunteered to be the hero. He had already planned to sneak into the factory secretly, and now he had a perfect excuse. For a beauty, he was more than willing to risk it. With a mischievous grin, he said, “Yixue, leave this to me. I’ll gather enough evidence.”
Bai Jing understood his meaning. Although she didn’t want Lin Yang to take such a risk for her sake, she was his friend and wished to protect him. Who knew what awaited them beyond the walls?
“Xiao Yang, you can’t do this. I’d feel guilty letting you take such a risk,” Bai Jing said worriedly, her delicate hand suddenly grasping Lin Yang’s right arm. She truly didn’t want him to venture into danger.
“Jing, instead of sitting and waiting to die, why not strike them with a fatal blow while they’re unprepared? Don’t you trust my strength? A bunch of small fry can’t trap me.” He pushed away her hands, stepped out of the car. The hidden parking spot and the nearby vehicles provided good cover, so no one noticed.
Just as Lin Yang was about to move, he remembered something. Turning back, he tapped on the car window and teased Bai Jing with a playful smile, “Jing, if little brother gets caught, remember to take care of me.”
Surprisingly, Bai Jing didn’t protest. Her simple words of concern revealed the worries in her heart: “No matter what happens, be careful.”
Seeing Lin Yang hesitate to leave, Bai Jing added, puzzled, “Xiao Yang, is there something else?”
