Blocked at every turn, Su Yaxue’s anger was fully kindled. Was she really only trying to haul in a petty thief who had run a red light and make him explain himself at the station? Why did it have to be so difficult?

If the Red Army had once climbed snow-capped mountains and crossed grasslands, surmounting ridge after ridge, perhaps it had felt no easier than this.

At first, she merely knocked out the bodyguards who barred her way, or, after one fierce blow had left them unable to continue entangling her, she would stop there. She had come to arrest someone, not to stir up trouble. Besides, she was an officer of the law, a servant of the people, and would never do anything that heaven and earth would condemn, anything against reason, or anything that broke the law she herself was sworn to uphold.

But there were always troublesome opponents. After taking down ten bodyguards without the slightest mercy, Su Yaxue finally met the most difficult one of all: the captain of the guard.

She was a delicate little doll of a beauty, a little over five and a half feet tall, slim and slight, while the obstacle before her had already turned into a towering brute of a man, well over six feet, the sort of hulking, muscular fighter you might see in a boxing ring. In comparison, Su Yaxue really had no advantage at all.

Deprived of any chance to test strength against strength, she could only rely on her own strengths: speed and agility. She circled and maneuvered around the bodyguard, but the longer the struggle went on, the more helpless she felt. There was even a sense of utter powerlessness. Worse still, she had misjudged one thing: the big man, though he looked clumsy and massive, was in fact not heavy-footed at all. His speed was a little slower than hers, yes, just a little, but compared with ordinary people he was still much quicker. And for that, Su Yaxue paid a heavy price.

Being entangled by such a rough, savage muscle-bound man was no pleasant thing. Before long, Su Yaxue was completely trapped by him, as though she had been clamped in a pair of steel tongs, unable to move. As his strength increased, she began to feel as though she were suffocating, as though her blood were swelling inside her veins; even her little face turned crimson from holding her breath.

Losing the initiative, Su Yaxue could not help feeling a trace of helplessness. This was the first strength-based opponent she had ever encountered since beginning her career, and in their first clash she had suffered a complete defeat.

Yet a stubborn woman could always create a miracle. And just then, the giant bodyguard, somewhat pleased with himself, relaxed his grip by a fraction. Sensitive as she was, Su Yaxue caught that instantly. She lifted her foot and came down hard on the little toe of his right foot, the one place he had left utterly unguarded.

The agony shot through the nerves like lightning and straight into the bodyguard’s brain. Driven by pain, he reflexively grabbed at his right foot with both hands, writhing in torment.

That gave Su Yaxue the chance to break free from his hold. After her first failure, the proud young woman had learned her lesson. Taking into account the disadvantage of her physique, she switched to a more circuitous strategy, playing a game of cat and mouse with the bodyguard as he slowly recovered from the pain.

The big man, having been toyed with until he was dizzy, quickly lost his patience. Once impatience clouded his judgment, his best options disappeared. Before long he was forced onto the defensive, though he still stubbornly blocked Su Yaxue from entering the hall.

Su Yaxue practiced taekwondo, so her joint-locking techniques were devastatingly effective. At that moment she clung to the giant bodyguard like an octopus, pinning both of his arms with her legs while her small hands twisted his joints the wrong way, locking him down tightly. Whenever he struggled, she only increased the force.

With each burst of effort, the bodyguard’s face changed color. His spasms made him look as though he were having a seizure.

“No. Absolutely not. I have to stop you from disturbing Brother Yang while he’s saving someone, or all our effort will be wasted.” Even though pain made his face twitch, the giant still stubbornly refused to back down.

“Humph. Then you leave me no choice,” Su Yaxue said coldly.

Seeing that even while pinned down the big man remained so obstinate, her anger flared higher. She intended to give him a lesson he would never forget. A dislocated joint would not kill anyone anyway; once it was put back, he would be fine.

Just as the little doll-like beauty was about to strike without restraint, Lin Yang happened to step out of the room and walk toward the two of them tangled together on the tiled floor. He put on a mournful expression and called to the fierce little police officer, “Stop. This has nothing to do with him. I’ll go with you right now.”

Since the culprit who had run the red light had come out voluntarily to submit to the law, Su Yaxue was not the sort to be unreasonable. She loosened her grip on the big man, who was gritting his teeth in pain on the floor, then pulled out the stainless-steel handcuffs she had been forced to tuck into her belt during the fight and shook them at Lin Yang with a satisfied smile.

Lin Yang cooperated with perfect ease. He took the handcuffs himself and fastened them on, then grinned and said, “All right, little beauty officer. You can relax now and take me back.”

“Humph. You know your place,” Su Yaxue said. “Otherwise I’ll make sure you suffer for it. You’ve caused me to make such a scene today. To be honest, your bodyguards really aren’t much to brag about.”

With that, she snorted at Lin Yang and swept her gaze across the dozen or so people sprawled on the ground in pain.

Because their positions had been scattered, they actually formed a curved line if one looked closely. It was rather amusing.

“Uh, they just don’t bother arguing with women,” Lin Yang said shamelessly, glancing at the bodyguard captain who was just then struggling to his feet.

“You can’t take Brother Yang away!”

Zhang Qiqi, who had heard the commotion outside, rushed out of her father’s bedroom. The instant she saw Lin Yang handcuffed and about to be taken away, she ran forward to stop them.

Seeing her rush in without saying a word to stand in front of him, Lin Yang felt warmth surge through his heart. He shot a hard glare at Leng Nini, who was standing by the entrance to the hall, and cursed inwardly: Damn it, this girl has no idea how to care about people. Look how considerate the new girl Qiqi is.

When Lin Yang glanced at her, Leng Nini returned the look without the slightest politeness. Under her breath, she muttered, “Hmph. The police chief is probably going to get a headache in a minute.”

Then, with great curiosity, she fixed her eyes on the little policewoman in uniform, silently wondering where such a fierce woman had come from. What interested her even more was what grand commotion would happen at the police station later. She still remembered the first time Lin Yang had come to the Tianchen District Police Bureau. Thinking of Chief Wang, the fat man with the surname Wang, and the look on his face, she almost laughed aloud.

“Humph, who are you? He broke the law, and I’m carrying out official duty. That’s perfectly natural. If you keep obstructing me, then you’re interfering with official business, and I can take you back as well, entirely within my rights.”

Seeing a beautiful woman a full head taller than herself blocking her path and obstructing her work, Su Yaxue’s face darkened. She opened her mouth and said icily, her tone carrying unmistakable warning.

Zhang Qiqi, who had not even finished junior high school, was truly frightened. She involuntarily stepped back two paces, ending up pressed against Lin Yang’s chest. But very soon she stubbornly stepped forward again, spread her arms wide, and protected him as if her life depended on it.

“No. Absolutely not. If you want to arrest someone, then arrest us both.”

Women, once they start being unreasonable, really are terrifying. Should one call her foolish, or should one call her stubborn?

Zhang Qiqi gritted her teeth so hard it looked as though someone were trying to snatch away her first love. Her pitiful yet stubborn look made anyone who saw it want to step forward and comfort her.

Unfortunately, standing before her was a cold and merciless young woman, and she really had no way to deal with her. Seeing Su Yaxue’s face grow even colder, Zhang Qiqi thrust out her hands and said obstinately, “Fine then, if you want to arrest someone, go ahead and arrest me too.”

Lin Yang could not bear to watch any longer. He reached out and pulled Zhang Qiqi aside, saying with a grin, “It’s all right, Qiqi. It’s not my first time. Don’t worry, she’ll send me back after talking to her chief.”

As he spoke, he patted Zhang Qiqi on the shoulder, then looked at the little police officer who wore a face full of disdain and smiled. “Let’s go, little beauty officer. And really, you’re so pretty, but if you keep being this fierce, no one will dare marry you.”

Teasing and joking were habits Lin Yang had carried since childhood, bad habits by his own admission, yet he wore them almost like a badge of honor. Seeing such a cute young beauty, he could not resist saying a few teasing words. It was not as if it could kill him; having a little fun with his tongue was not bad at all.

Also drawn out by the noise was Su Qin, who had been keeping her husband Zhang Zifeng company. After hearing her daughter Zhang Qiqi’s crying voice, she grew worried and hurried out from inside as well.

At first glance, seeing the little beauty in police uniform, her face also tightened a little. In her mind, police officers were the sort who came to take people away. Then, catching sight of the pair of handcuffs on Lin Yang’s wrist, she could not help asking worriedly, “Xiao Yang, what happened? Why is she arresting you?”

Before Lin Yang could speak, the little beauty, Su Yaxue, cut in first. She assumed the woman who had rushed out was the man’s mother and did not want her to worry, so she smiled and said, “Auntie, don’t worry. It’s nothing serious. He just ran a red light. I’m taking him back to give a statement. He’ll be fine.”

Hearing that it was only a red-light violation, Su Qin finally relaxed. After giving a few instructions, she hurried back into the house. Her husband’s condition was still unstable, and she did not dare linger outside.

Under Zhang Qiqi’s clingy persistence, Leng Nini was dragged along and got into the police car as well. Although the other side had said it was only a red-light violation and nothing serious, she was still worried. After all, in the final analysis, Lin Yang had run the light because he was worried about her father, and at the root of it all, the matter still came from the Zhang family. No matter what, she had to go with them for a trip.

It was Zhang Qiqi’s first time riding in a police car. Compared with Lin Yang and Leng Nini, who were perfectly composed, she looked much more tense. In her mind, only two kinds of people rode in police cars: the relatives of police officers, or criminals. Clearly she was not the first kind, but to call her the second did not seem right either.

Su Yaxue’s driving skills were truly something else. Her level was comparable to Lin Yang’s, and no wonder she had not been shaken off by him under those circumstances. Thinking about it now, it all seemed only natural.

Still, Lin Yang was deeply dissatisfied. He cursed inwardly: Damn it, so when you drive, you can run red lights and that’s fine?

Indeed, all the way there, Su Yaxue could be said to have run every red light she saw, which left Lin Yang, the man arrested for running a red light, feeling extremely unbalanced.

During the trip, Lin Yang grumbled indignantly. In response, the little policewoman tossed out a shameless line that was infuriating enough to kill.

“I’m a police officer. I have that privilege.”

After hearing that, Lin Yang fell silent, but in his heart he began to consider whether he ought to ask Wang Ergou for that police car parked in the compound.

With such speed on the road, they did not waste much time before the group was brought to the police bureau.

It had been said that Su Yaxue had already made some achievement on her very first day at work, so Wang Ergou naturally took it to heart. After all, she had been arranged there by an old friend of his. When he heard from one of his subordinates that the girl had returned, he hurried over to take a look and, incidentally, to encourage her and praise her a little.

With a broad smile, he pushed open the door of the interrogation room. Seeing the proud little girl, Wang Ergou could barely close his mouth from smiling. The compliments began pouring out before he had even taken a full breath. Praise cost nothing, so naturally he was happy to be generous with it.

But when his eyes turned to the young man seated in the interrogation chair, the once-bright smile on Wang Ergou’s face instantly turned ashen, and he blurted out in misery, “Why is it him?”
