Chapter Ninety: Damn It
The man who looked like a demon, the man who had turned the police station upside down the last time, the man who had slapped him several times, the man whose sinister smile was enough to send a chill through anyone, the man who...
When Wang Ergou clearly saw the mocking, slick grin on Lin Yang’s face, his body shuddered involuntarily, and he nearly stumbled to the ground.
Turning to look at Su Yaxue, who stood there smiling as if nothing were wrong, Wang Ergou felt both anger and helplessness. He cursed inwardly: This girl had only been on the job for a day, and already she had stirred up a disaster this big. If the powerful people behind this kid found out that he’d been taken into the police station, then he, Wang Ergou, would be lucky to escape with his skin intact.
Fixing his gaze once more on Lin Yang, Wang Ergou bit the bullet and walked forward. He barked at the officer beside him, “What are you standing there for? Uncuff Brother Yang right now! Do you not want to keep this job?” Then, with a fawning smile, he turned to Lin Yang seated in the chair and said, “Brother Yang, look, Yaxue is new here and doesn’t know you. Could you be generous and let her off just this once?”
Su Yaxue, who had been waiting with her chin lifted for her Uncle Ergou to praise her for a job well done, could not help frowning. Looking at the reckless fellow sitting in the chair, calm and composed, her expression changed again and again: anger, murderous intent, and boundless hatred.
As the daughter of Su Dongyang, she naturally knew a great deal about the ways of official circles. What she had not expected was that her luck would be so terrible that the random person she grabbed would actually be a big shot, and worse yet, one of those crafty people who hid their claws while pretending to be harmless. But since things had already happened, she was not the kind to bow her head and admit fault so easily. Seeing Wang Ergou apologizing to Lin Yang, she glared at him fiercely, feeling deeply displeased.
“Ha ha ha, Chief Wang, that’s a little too much. I was indeed at fault first today. I was rushing to save someone, and the patient was in critical condition, so I had no choice but to break traffic rules and run the red light. That can’t be blamed on the young lady.” Lin Yang spoke with a carefree air, smiling lazily, not the least bit angry or inclined to make a scene.
Seeing Lin Yang’s attitude, Wang Ergou only grew more worried. He clearly remembered that last time this kid had worn that same calm, indifferent expression, and afterward he had been plagued by one misfortune after another: slaps to the face, kicks to the backside, and nearly even a whipping. How could that not leave a lasting impression?
Afraid of being caught in the crossfire again, Wang Ergou quickly tugged Su Yaxue over and shot her a hard glare. “Yaxue, hurry up, apologize to Brother Yang!”
Su Yaxue was not the kind of girl who would bow and scrape. Her temper was stubborn to the bone; how could she possibly lower her head to anyone? Besides, she had done nothing wrong. She yanked her arm away from Wang Ergou’s thick, rough hand and retorted stubbornly, “Uncle Ergou, I didn’t do anything wrong. He ran the red light. I brought him in as part of my duty. Why should I apologize to him?”
Seeing that Su Yaxue refused to yield in the slightest, Wang Ergou’s face darkened. He cursed inwardly: Do I want you to admit fault? The problem is that this kid has powerful people behind him! If we offend him, you and your father may both end up in trouble.
Endure a little, and the storm will pass. At that moment, Wang Ergou desperately wished Su Yaxue would understand the depth of that saying.
Lin Yang said nothing. He merely stood to the side, watching the uncle and niece perform their little act. Still, he was growing more and more interested in the girl’s stubbornness. Once upon a time, had he not been just as stubborn, just as unyielding, when he stood against the old man at home?
Seeing that he could not persuade Su Yaxue, Wang Ergou hurried to the side and pulled out his phone. He made two calls in a row. At this point, he could only ask those two for help, or else he really would be doomed.
...
“Nini, Nini, how can you still sit there? Brother Yang’s been in there for almost ten minutes already. Why isn’t he out yet?” Zhang Qiqi, standing in the waiting hall, anxiously asked Leng Nini, who was sitting on a hard bench with a leisurely air.
“Ah, Sister Qiqi, I already told you Brother Yang won’t be in any trouble. Stop pacing in front of me, will you? You’re making me dizzy. Really, you need to stay calm, understand? Calm.” Leng Nini put down the tablet in her hands and looked up at Zhang Qiqi, who was wandering back and forth in the hall, puffing out her cheeks in protest.
This little girl really was calm. Zhang Qiqi had dragged her all the way to the police station, and she had even brought a tablet with her. So there she sat, contentedly watching a movie. But Zhang Qiqi, worried about Lin Yang’s safety, kept pacing in front of her, and it was enough to make the girl’s cheeks swell with frustration.
After speaking, she went right back to holding her tablet and watching. Very soon, peals of delighted laughter came from her as she doubled over.
“You little brat.” With a helpless sigh, Zhang Qiqi walked to the entrance of the hall and asked a young policeman standing there, “Excuse me, officer, why is it taking so long?”
The other man simply shook his head indifferently, though inwardly he was burning with envy. What kind of lucky fellow had been brought in, to have two such lovely girls waiting for him?
...
Watching Su Yaxue stubbornly refuse to apologize no matter what he said, Wang Ergou was completely defeated. He had already wasted plenty of saliva, worn out his tongue, and still could not change her attitude by even a little.
Caught between the two of them as the mediator, and with his own bulky frame plus the fact that he seldom exercised, he had already worked himself into a sweat after only a short while. Beads of perspiration the size of beans rolled down his face.
Perhaps because he was interested in the stubbornness of this little beauty, Lin Yang never said a word from beginning to end, letting the two of them perform their duet.
“Uncle Ergou, I’ve already said it. I’d rather die than apologize to this guy, so stop wasting your breath. At worst, at worst, I’ll just quit.” After being lectured repeatedly, Su Yaxue finally lost her temper. She reached up, tore off the cap from her head, and hurled it to the ground, roaring in anger.
The girl’s sharp voice caused Wang Ergou, who stood closest to her, to suffer for it. He covered his buzzing ears with a hand, cursing inwardly: Damn it, why the hell haven’t those two gotten here yet? If they’re any slower, something big is going to happen again.
At first, he had planned to have Su Yaxue apologize to Lin Yang, say a few nice words, and then send him back. But this girl was impenetrable, refusing to bend no matter what. Now it was neither possible to send Lin Yang away nor to keep him here.
It is easy to invite a god, but hard to send him away. That saying was absolutely true. On top of that, Lin Yang had stood to the side all along, saying nothing and doing nothing, which made Wang Ergou even less able to guess what he was thinking.
Just as the tense atmosphere had risen to a certain point, a burst of hurried footsteps came from the corridor. The three of them could hear it clearly: two sets of footsteps.
“Xiaoxue? Xiaoxue, what happened?” Immediately after, a mature, seasoned, somewhat hoarse voice carried from far down the corridor into the interrogation room.
“Hey, Dad, slow down. If you fall, you’ll really make a fool of yourself.” Another rough voice followed right behind.
“Hmph. If I slow down any more, your little sister will lose her life. And you still have the nerve to say that?” The hoarse voice snapped back at the younger one trailing behind.
As their verbal sparring drew nearer and nearer, the door to the interrogation room was slammed open.
The person who came in was a burly man, over six feet tall, with a thick beard and lines at the corners of his eyes. One look was enough to tell that he was already in his prime years.
Right behind him was a younger man, whom Lin Yang recognized at a glance: Su Xiaodong. It was this kid.
Linking together what the two had just said in the corridor outside, Lin Yang instantly reached a conclusion: the stubborn little beauty before him was this fellow’s own younger sister.
Still finding it hard to believe, he looked the two of them over several times and fell silent in confusion. He seriously doubted how their genes had worked out so unevenly. The difference was simply too great.
Su Xiaodong was not handsome enough to bring ruin to a nation, but the little beauty before him absolutely possessed the capital to topple cities and kingdoms.
“Xiaoxue, are you causing trouble again?” The burly man who had come in swept his gaze across everyone in the room, nodded to Wang Ergou as a greeting, and then walked up to the girl and asked in a deep voice.
Meanwhile, Su Xiaodong had fixed his eyes on Lin Yang. Seeing that greasy, shameless smile on his face, he vaguely sensed that something was off. He thought to himself: Could it be that my little sister offended Lin Yang?
Before Su Xiaodong could step forward to ask anything, the girl questioned by her father flew into a rage. With a look of grievance, Su Yaxue roared, “I did nothing wrong. He ran the red light!” As she spoke, she pointed at the grinning Lin Yang.
Only then did the middle-aged burly man turn his attention to Lin Yang. In his heart he muttered in confusion: Ran a red light? If he ran a red light, you could have just written a ticket. Why did you drag him all the way back to the police station?
As though he had seen Su Dongyang’s confusion, Wang Ergou stepped forward and whispered a long explanation into his ear. Afterward, he put on a helpless, embarrassed expression and turned to look at Lin Yang, who was already chatting with Su Xiaodong.
Seeing the young man talking so familiarly with his son, Su Dongyang turned to his old friend with a face full of disbelief and murmured softly, “You’re saying the kid who caused a scene in your police station last time and brought a whole crowd of big shots down on you was this one?”
Wang Ergou did not answer. He only nodded heavily, full of helplessness. He thought to himself that this was the first time since sitting in this position that such a humiliating thing had happened. Being slapped in front of everyone and still having to plaster on a smile—how could that not be disgraceful? But the man’s backing was simply too strong, and he had no choice but to swallow his anger and flatter him, hoping that one day he might still rise to fame and fortune.
“Xiaodong seems to be on very good terms with him,” Su Dongyang said, sounding almost to himself.
“They’ve known each other a long time. Last time, it was thanks to your boy that I got away with less suffering than I might have otherwise.” At that, Wang Ergou could not help but feel grateful.
“Then let them talk a bit longer. We’ll go over in a moment.”
“Hahaha, so she really is your little sister.” Hearing that Su Xiaodong had called her that, Lin Yang teased with a laugh.
“Mm, absolutely. Born from the same mother.” Su Xiaodong laughed without restraint. If he could have seen the dark look on his father’s face at that very moment, one wonders whether he would still have been able to laugh so freely.
“Your sister is much prettier than you are.” After looking Su Yaxue over once more, Lin Yang said meaningfully.
“Hahaha, of course. My sister is the school beauty everyone at their school recognizes. She’d just finished junior high when she wanted to come work in the station to gain some experience, and who knew that on her very first day on the job, she’d offend you, Brother Yang?” Su Xiaodong wore a pained expression and muttered miserably.
Then he turned toward Su Yaxue, who stood nearby looking wronged, and shouted, “Come on, little sis, hurry over here and meet your Brother Yang. Oh, right, your Brother Yang is an expert in plastic surgery. If you ask him nicely, maybe he’ll take pity on you and cure that little injury of yours.” His words carried a distinctly teasing undertone, and his eyes even drifted, intentionally or not, toward his sister’s perky backside.
