Chapter Fifty: This Is What You Want
After making a round of the reception, Pei Susu gained a general understanding of the projects the company was currently involved in and formulated her own plan.
"Excuse me, could you introduce me to your manager? I'm interested in your recent project in the eastern part of the city and would like to talk to him," she said.
The employee, surprised to encounter such an unfamiliar face, hesitated for a moment. But at the mention of investment, his eyes immediately lit up.
"Of course! I'm actually in charge of the East City project, miss. Let me take you to meet our manager right away!"
It was going even more smoothly than she had expected. Pei Susu followed the employee, listening to his enthusiastic, nonstop introduction, and couldn't help but feel a little guilty.
Unfortunately, she had no real involvement in this field and her interest was simply a pretext. The employee's dedication was, in the end, a wasted hope.
"If you're willing to invest, I promise we won't let you down. Our Director Qiu Ze is one of the top technical experts in the country, and this project is guaranteed to be a success!"
Qiu Ze...
Since this wasn't a field Pei Susu often dabbled in, she wasn't particularly familiar with the name. Suddenly, a commotion erupted not far away, drawing both her and the employee's attention.
"Someone's fainted!"
At those words, Pei Susu's heart sank. She strode forward, pushing past the gathering crowd.
"Let me take a look."
Her voice was calm, yet carried a note of authority that brooked no refusal. The people around hesitated, then made way for her.
Pei Susu gave the collapsed person a quick examination: pale lips, ashen face—by the symptoms, it was likely a sudden fainting spell caused by heart trouble. Having learned first aid in the past, she directed a few people to stand aside and began rescue measures with composure.
The others were startled by her confident demeanor, though also a bit confused.
They couldn't remember seeing someone like her at the company. If she had an ordinary face, perhaps she simply wasn't memorable, but with such striking features, it was impossible she would have gone unnoticed.
Sweat beaded on Pei Susu's brow from the tension and the exertion of the rescue. After a while, her hands began to feel numb, but she didn't stop.
"Cough, cough..."
At last, the person on the floor let out a few weak coughs and opened his eyes.
"Director Qiu, are you alright?"
As soon as he regained consciousness, those around him surrounded him with concern.
It seemed the unconscious man was quite popular.
Pei Susu shook out her hands, belatedly realizing—the man she'd just saved must be Director Qiu Ze, mentioned earlier by the employee. If he was such an important figure, it made sense the company staff treated the situation so seriously.
"It's all thanks to this young lady, Director Qiu. Fortunately, you're alright."
Qiu Ze usually carried his emergency medication, but today, having changed his attire, he had forgotten the medicine on the table before leaving, never expecting his old illness to recur at such an inconvenient time.
Were it not for Pei Susu, the consequences might have been dire.
"Director Qiu, please don't speak for now. The ambulance is already on its way. There's no rush to talk. You need to rest and recover first."
"It's only because you've been working around the clock lately that this happened," another middle-aged man nearby admonished. After Qiu Ze nodded, he turned to Pei Susu, puzzled.
"I don't believe I've seen you around the company before, miss. May I ask who you are?"
Pei Susu replied unhurriedly, "I'm interested in one of your company's projects and came to discuss an investment."
The man's expression softened slightly at the mention of investment, but after looking her up and down, he still seemed doubtful.
"I'm quite familiar with all our recent partners, but I don't recall you among them. What exactly did you intend to invest in?"
Pei Susu was at a loss. She had only listened to the employee's brief overview and didn't really understand the company's line of work. She was just about to make up a reason when she noticed the man already regarding her suspiciously.
"Enough, miss. There's no need to pretend. What are you really doing at our company's event?"
His gaze clearly regarded her as a potential corporate spy.
Pei Susu hadn't expected to be exposed so quickly; the company's management was quite astute. She was about to explain herself when a weak voice spoke up beside her.
"This lady must be seeking something. Since you saved me today, I'll allow you to ask me a few questions."
It was clear Qiu Ze held considerable authority in the company. Since her real purpose was already revealed, Pei Susu saw no point in subterfuge and spoke candidly.
"I'd like to know something about President Robert of Ti..."
At this, the man understood.
"So that's the real reason. Miss, you must be aware that information about Robert is extremely difficult to come by these days. We won't pursue how you got in, but please don't trouble us further."
His tone was icy and formal. Pei Susu clenched her fists in frustration.
Was this as far as she could go?
"Wait a moment," Qiu Ze suddenly interjected, his voice still hoarse. The man hesitated, but ultimately deferred to Qiu Ze's words.
In truth, Qiu Ze was the pillar supporting the entire company; even the president had to heed his opinion.
"Here is my contact information. Get in touch with me tomorrow. How about that?"
Though Qiu Ze hadn't given her a direct answer, Pei Susu sensed a glimmer of hope.
She accepted the business card from his hand.
It was clear now: Qiu Ze wielded absolute influence in this company. Perhaps she really could obtain the information she sought.
Soon, the ambulance arrived, and Qiu Ze was taken away. From his improved color, it seemed the danger had passed.
It would have been awkward for Pei Susu to remain, so after Qiu Ze's departure, she left the event as well.
Early the next morning, Pei Susu received a message from Qiu Ze, arranging a meeting at a café.
"Wonderful..."
Her eyes lit up with excitement as she read the message. Joy danced across her face as she jumped up to change clothes, arriving at the appointed place within half an hour.
Inside the café, Qiu Ze was already seated in a corner, coffee ordered, with a laptop open before him.
It was clear he enjoyed working here regularly, and today’s meeting was simply a matter to be settled during his leisure.
"Miss Pei," he greeted, nodding when he saw her. Though he seemed a bit distant, Pei Susu was deeply grateful for the chance to meet him at all. She drew out the chair and sat down across from him.
"This is what you wanted."
