Chapter Ninety-Five: Obtaining the Medical Records
The director was a middle-aged man who appeared exceedingly honest, wearing an ordinary pair of black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. He hardly looked like someone accustomed to holding a high position, yet Fu Zhichen would never mistake him. Pei Susu sat quietly nearby as the director handed over the documents beside him.
"While President Fu was on his way, I’ve already pulled the files for that reporter and Madam Chen. The reporter's injuries are not serious at all—just a fall, a careless sprain, not even enough to qualify as a minor injury."
"But… Madam Chen's situation is far from optimistic. As things stand, it seems she’ll never be able to bear children again for the rest of her life."
Pei Susu was momentarily stunned, not expecting Madam Chen’s condition to be genuine. She took the files from the director’s hands, her expression darkening as she read the report.
"Did you see the trending topics on your way here, President Fu? The reporter’s family is smearing your reputation online. With this diagnosis in your hands, any rumors they spread will naturally collapse on their own."
They were merely taking advantage and feigning innocence, seeking sympathy online to earn some money. Behind it all, M Group was orchestrating events, so targeting the reporter’s family alone was futile. The real move had to be against M Group itself—gather all the evidence and deliver a fatal blow.
The best strategy, of course, would be to hold a press conference and lay everything out plainly before the public. However, their evidence was too rigid; many people might not readily accept it.
Thus, on the way over, they had already agreed: they would start with Madam Chen and the reporter’s family, persuading them to clarify the rumors themselves. Only then would it be a true "clarification."
"We have our own plans regarding this," Pei Susu interrupted, "Which room is Madam Chen in? I’d like to see her alone."
Fu Zhichen turned his gaze toward her.
They hadn’t discussed this before arriving.
The director hesitated, for disclosing a patient’s condition was merely doing Fu Zhichen a favor, but arranging a meeting with the patient was not so simple.
Noticing the director’s reluctance, Pei Susu said, "Since you know how to retrieve the records, you must also understand why we’re here."
"Fu Group is entirely innocent in this matter. Madam Chen must be persuaded, or who knows what might happen next."
Her words clearly unsettled the director further, yet he remained unwilling.
"But the hospital is supposed to protect every patient's privacy. Arranging such a meeting would harm our image…"
Seeing this, Pei Susu replied, "But you’ve already shown us their medical information, haven’t you? And do you think letting this matter escalate in your hospital would benefit your reputation in any way?"
Each of Pei Susu’s words struck with force, and the director, already wavering, could only smile bitterly.
"I didn’t expect Miss Pei to be so eloquent… I can’t refute what you’ve said, but the hospital isn’t mine alone. Though I’m the director, offending someone of Madam Chen’s status requires careful consideration."
Pei Susu only wished for an honest conversation with Madam Chen—this was the only way to be qualified for negotiations.
"Here’s what we’ll do: show Madam Chen this, and tell her I wish to meet with her. If she refuses, so be it."
Pei Susu handed over Madam Chen’s child’s DNA test results, their strongest bargaining chip at present.
Once she saw this, even if Madam Chen didn’t want to meet, she would have to reconsider.
The director clutched the report, not daring to glance at it, fearful of being drawn into some high-society scandal.
This was the best method available, so the director, after barely hesitating, agreed at once.
"Very well, since Miss Pei insists, I’ll make the introduction. Please wait here; I’ll go see Madam Chen now and ask her opinion."
As the director departed, Pei Susu turned to Fu Zhichen, meeting his deep gaze and feeling somewhat uneasy.
"You’d already thought this through on the way, hadn’t you?"
Pei Susu could not have decided on this on a whim; her intention to meet Madam Chen must have been set before they arrived.
Fu Zhichen saw through her at once, and Pei Susu no longer concealed it, nodding.
"I know most of this isn’t related to me, but the person I have the most contact with—and who’s easiest to approach—is Madam Chen."
Before coming, Pei Susu hadn’t expected Madam Chen’s condition to be so severe, but regardless, she had to try and talk to her.
Madam Chen was never someone to be easily manipulated by the president of M Group; if she could reveal the truth, her testimony would carry more weight than anyone else’s.
"Little Chen, you’re not angry that I acted on my own, are you?"
Fu Zhichen looked at the reflection of himself in Pei Susu’s eyes, then shook his head.
"No."
He would be right beside her, and Madam Chen, having just lost her child, could hardly pose any real danger to Pei Susu.
Since Pei Susu wished to try, he would let her.
During their brief exchange, the director returned swiftly.
"Madam Chen said she will see you."
Pei Susu’s lips curled in a smile, unsurprised—such a secret suddenly exposed, Madam Chen had to consider not only herself but the interests of several families. Anyone who had reached this position could no longer afford to be capricious.
"Sister, let me go with you."
Hearing this address, the director coughed lightly, but Pei Susu shook her head.
"If you come with me, she might not let down her guard, and our conversation may not achieve its purpose."
Seeing Fu Zhichen’s brows suddenly furrow, Pei Susu gently reassured him.
"Don’t worry. Given her current condition, she won’t trouble me."
"We’re only going to talk. There will be no other conflict, so you needn’t worry."
The director, keeping his eyes and ears down, stood aside like a decorative vase—he hadn’t expected Fu Zhichen and Pei Susu to interact in such a way. Fu Zhichen actually listened to Pei Susu, proving their feelings were real. From the moment the news broke, outsiders had condemned Fu Group, but those within the industry saw things far more clearly.
A giant like Fu Group would never be toppled by such baseless accusations, and Fu Zhichen was certainly not someone easily manipulated.
And Pei Susu, able to be with Fu Zhichen, had already crossed the bounds of class.
