Chapter Eighty-Six: Cannot Wait for Death
On the other side, Pei Susu was also tossing and turning, utterly at a loss for what to do. If she stepped forward directly, the result might well be the exact opposite of what she intended. Yet if she did nothing, simply lying here, she couldn't help but worry about Fu Zhichen. After all, this whole incident had started because of her—she couldn’t just let him shoulder the burden alone.
After much deliberation, Pei Susu finally got out of bed and turned on her phone to search for the latest news. As expected, the headlines were flooded with reports about today’s events. And, unsurprisingly, that reporter had already landed in trouble.
“Everyone’s at the hospital now… what should I do?”
Once the public frenzy began, all anyone would focus on was Fu Zhichen pushing that reporter. The scene at the time had been so chaotic and complicated that no one could guarantee that his push hadn’t actually caused any harm. If it became impossible to prove otherwise, the situation would only become more troublesome.
She didn’t even know where Fu Zhichen was at this moment. He must be having a hard time handling all this, yet he was bearing it all alone, telling her nothing.
“No, I absolutely can’t just sit here and wait for disaster to strike.”
Pei Susu tightened her grip on her phone, her eyes growing colder and sharper. This time, they had truly touched her last nerve. She had always believed that as long as she was strong enough, she would never become a burden to anyone. But now, it was clear—she still wasn’t strong enough. She needed to become even stronger, work even harder, so that those close to her wouldn’t get hurt because of her!
…
After thinking it over for a while, Fu Yanyue decided to go find Fu Zhichen first. The elders’ attitudes had been dreadful lately, and if things continued this way, Pei Susu might end up getting hurt. No matter what, they couldn’t just sit by and do nothing.
Fu Zhichen had just gotten the hospital report, and his assistant finally breathed a sigh of relief—it was fortunate that Mr. Fu was clever enough to seize the moment and retrieve the reporter’s report.
“With this, we can clear things up. But I still don’t quite understand—who would go out of their way to frame us like this?”
Just then, Fu Yanyue arrived and overheard the question. She let out a cold laugh and strode over. “It’s definitely our competitor company. Who else could come up with such a vile and disgusting scheme?”
“Their response was quick enough, too. The moment something happened here, they found a way to slander the Fu Group.”
Fu Zhichen frowned slightly when he saw her. “Why are you here too?”
Fu Yanyue hung her head, an expression of guilt on her face. “If I hadn’t left the auction so abruptly, I definitely wouldn’t have let anyone hurt Susu. This was my fault, and I’ll take responsibility and help however I can.”
Now was exactly when they needed more people. Though Fu Yanyue could seem unreliable at times, she was actually quite capable when it counted.
“Coordinate with the assistant. If I’m not mistaken, the people targeting us this time are from the M Group.”
The two companies had been at odds for a while now. For a long time, the M Group had been suppressed by the Fu Group and had resorted to various maneuvers to try to gain the upper hand, but every attempt had failed. So this time, they’d resorted to such an outrageous tactic to try to trip up Fu Zhichen.
“Right now, the M Group might not be our biggest problem… The real issue is the elders at home. They’re all in an uproar.”
Fu Zhichen had never cared much about them, but after all, they were the elders of the Fu Group—each wielded real power. If they formed a poor impression of Pei Susu, it would hardly be easy for the two of them to be together in the future.
“They’ve already made up their minds. Arguing with them now is pointless.”
Fu Zhichen knew them well—unless Pei Susu was a perfect match for the Fu Group, the kind of heiress they could accept, they would never approve of her. In their eyes, only someone who could benefit the group and their own interests was worthy of his choice; nothing else mattered to them.
“So… should we start investigating the M Group’s recent moves?”
“There’s also that Madam Chen—she’s certainly no saint. She’s the one who bullied Susu, that’s for sure. And her so-called outstanding son? She still wants to pair him with Susu?”
The assistant smacked his forehead nearby. “Right, President Pei, we really should have looked into Madam Chen’s situation too. Who knows if her miscarriage was real or just a ruse? If we could prove they were faking, the public pressure would ease up a lot!”
“There’s no time.”
Reporters had already started to take notice. If they lingered in the hospital any longer, they’d be swarmed, and then they’d be forced to present their evidence to clear themselves on the spot.
The assistant nodded in agreement.
No wonder Mr. Fu was the boss—he always thought further ahead than the rest.
“For now, we’ll lay low and wait until we find the mastermind behind all this. Then we’ll decide on our next move.”
Fu Yanyue’s gaze was deep. After speaking, she turned to Fu Zhichen with a slightly goofy look. “Was I right? I’ve learned a lot from Susu lately—I’m not the same person I was before. Hmph!”
“Now’s not the time for nonsense,” Fu Zhichen replied, glancing back at her.
“Don’t tell my sister too much about what’s happening here, understood?”
Clearly, there was a premeditated plot against him. If Jiang Xueran found out too much in advance, she’d only worry that she was dragging the Fu Group down with her.
Fu Yanyue nodded, looking quite obedient. Still… she suspected that with Pei Susu’s intelligence, even if they said nothing, she would figure it all out on her own.
“Don’t worry, I won’t cause any trouble for you!”
Fu Yanyue climbed into the car with them, heading back to the Fu Group to discuss their next steps. Now that they were certain the M Group was behind it, they had a clear direction—much better than blindly guessing.
The Fu Group’s information network covered nearly the entire industry. If things continued at this pace, it wouldn’t be long before new information surfaced, and then they could respond accordingly.
When they arrived at the Fu Group, the whole company was in chaos because of the day’s news. The sound of ringing phones echoed everywhere.
“Notify all department managers—we’ll have a meeting in half an hour.”
The assistant quickly acknowledged the order. “Yes, I’ll go inform everyone right away!”
Fu Zhichen turned to look at Fu Yanyue.
