He was truly on the verge of losing his mind.

“But our biggest problem right now is, how do we get inside?”

The place was swarming with reporters outside. Even with careful disguises, it was highly likely they would still be recognized.

Especially Fu Zhichen—his presence was so commanding, it was as if his name were carved into his very being.

Wouldn’t he be spotted immediately like this?

Thinking of this, the assistant couldn’t help but shake his head. He was nearly certain that if they walked in openly, the media would recognize Fu Zhichen on the spot.

“We’ll use the side entrance.”

From the very beginning, Fu Zhichen never imagined he could simply sneak in. These people had clearly prepared for this; they were already deeply familiar with his appearance. If he tried to disguise himself and was caught, it would only make things spiral further out of control.

“Huh?”

The assistant was a bit taken aback by how refreshingly straightforward the solution was, feeling a little embarrassed for overthinking things earlier. He quickly conferred with the driver to find the hospital’s side entrance.

There were still quite a few reporters here as well, but far fewer than at the main entrance. The moment Fu Zhichen stepped out of the car, someone nearby began to take notice.

Once they got a good look and confirmed Fu Zhichen’s identity, more people started to approach. But he and his assistant had already slipped inside, taking advantage of the brief lull before anyone could react.

No one had expected Fu Zhichen to enter while everyone else was distracted, using the side door. It was as if he’d rubbed their intelligence into the ground.

Inside the hospital, the situation wasn’t much better—journalists were everywhere, all desperate for first-hand information. The path forward was far from easy.

At last, they reached the door of the reporter’s operating room.

The red light above was still glowing, indicating the rescue was still underway.

“You butchers! Give me back my healthy son!”

The mother’s wailing was harrowing. Standing in the back, she was drenched in tears. Had he not known the truth, anyone would have thought her the most pitiable of mothers.

“Go find out what’s happening inside,” Fu Zhichen said, turning away. The scene before him stirred little emotion; he knew his own actions, and they were never reckless.

No matter how pitiful she looked, it was still just an act.

“President Fu, are you alright by yourself out here?”

The assistant hesitated. The storm was gathering, all of it directed at Fu Zhichen. He was uneasy about leaving him alone to weather it.

“Finding evidence inside is what matters most now,” Fu Zhichen replied in a low voice. “Go.”

He understood the urgency. If they didn’t investigate now, they might not get another chance. There was still a brief window before the hospital could be thoroughly bought off. In time, any paperwork could be forged.

The assistant slipped away unnoticed, and Fu Zhichen did nothing to alert suspicion, simply watching from not far away.

He seemed almost cold-blooded.

At that moment, his phone vibrated in his hand. Fu Zhichen glanced down at the familiar name on the screen but chose not to answer.

If he picked up now, it would only delay him.

Meanwhile, at the Fu family estate.

Several of the family elders were gathered together, watching the latest news and mocking Fu Zhichen with biting sarcasm.

An elder tapped his cane, his face thunderous with anger.

“Do you even know what kind of woman Pei Susu is? She’s managed to completely bewitch Zhichen!”

Negative stories about the Fu family flooded the news like a blizzard, each one weighing down further on their nerves.

“Well…”

The others exchanged glances, their faces tight with anger.

“No matter what, we absolutely cannot let such a troublemaker into the Fu family!”

There wasn’t even much of a relationship between the two yet, and already Fu Zhichen was losing all sense of reason for Pei Susu’s sake.

Pei Susu was certainly no angel, and the elders could not stand to see this happening.

“Maybe we should ask Yan Yue? She and Zhichen have been close lately, perhaps she knows more about what’s going on.”

Half an hour later, Fu Yan Yue stood before the elders, already guessing the reason for her summons and feeling more irritated by the moment.

After all, this was between Fu Zhichen and Pei Susu; she had no wish to meddle. But the elders pressed her relentlessly. Fu Yan Yue had never liked these old men, and now she liked them even less.

Guilt gnawed at her. If she hadn’t left early that day, Pei Susu might never have gotten caught up in all this. Perhaps none of it would have happened.

“Don’t ask me. If you want answers, ask them directly,” she said.

They simply didn’t dare confront Fu Zhichen themselves.

Now they were acting so righteously, as if all the blame belonged to Pei Susu.

“That woman Pei Susu is certainly no good!” one elder snorted. “She’s got no background, she’s divorced—what right does she have to enter our family?”

“I say, Zhichen is completely bewitched, but we who still have our wits must not let him make so many foolish mistakes!” the elder declared with finality. “They must break up!”

She was just one woman—there were plenty more out there. If word got out that Fu Zhichen was with a twice-married woman, how could they show their faces ever again?

Fu Yan Yue could see clearly that reasoning with them was pointless. She refused to say anything more and, after much bluster, they finally had no choice but to let her go.

The moment she stepped outside, Fu Yan Yue hurried to send a message to Fu Zhichen.

But she received no reply.

“He must be busy with everything that’s happening,” she thought, anxiety creeping in. She didn’t know all the details, but it was obvious: Pei Susu was the main target, yet everyone’s focus was fixed on Fu Zhichen.

It was deliberate. The pressure on him must be immense.

“I’d better not make things worse…”

She had wanted to visit Pei Susu, feeling genuinely guilty.

But given everything, her presence might only add to the chaos.
