Chapter 96: Mr. Fu, I Like You
If she could successfully overcome this ordeal, Pei Susu’s future would be limitless. The director certainly wouldn’t dare offend her, nor would he risk crossing the one whom Fu Zhichen cherished so dearly.
Having finally soothed Fu Zhichen, Pei Susu stood up alone. No matter what, she had to speak with Mrs. Chen today. If a civil conversation failed, she would resort to threats or inducements, but she absolutely could not let this hidden danger linger into tomorrow.
With this resolve, Pei Susu quickened her pace, heading forward. Mrs. Chen’s willingness to talk today was surely prompted by the evidence she’d seen, not by any genuine desire for dialogue. Pei Susu had realized this the moment she presented the DNA test results.
Thus, Mrs. Chen would not cooperate easily. But Pei Susu was not afraid.
Arriving at the floor of the wards, Pei Susu searched for Mrs. Chen’s room number when suddenly someone tapped her on the shoulder from behind. She turned to see a young woman dressed as a nurse, her face adorned with elaborate makeup, thick false lashes, and a heavy foundation—entirely at odds with the profession.
Pei Susu had no interest in quibbling over others’ choices. Noticing the nurse scrutinizing her intently, she spoke with curiosity, “Is there something you need?”
The nurse folded her arms, her expression tinged with disdain. “So you’re Pei Susu. You don’t look like much. If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to show my face.”
Pei Susu was baffled by this sudden insult, her brows furrowing. “Who are you?”
Certain she’d never met this person before, Pei Susu couldn’t fathom the source of such abrupt malice.
“That’s none of your business. I just can’t stand women like you—those who rely on their looks to seduce men.”
The nurse gave her another once-over. “In person, you’re nothing special. I don’t know what President Fu sees in you. You’re not even as good as me. At least I’m diligent and capable, and I wouldn’t bring him so much trouble.”
Pei Susu massaged her brow, beginning to understand the root of this hostility.
It was all because of Fu Zhichen.
Since their relationship became public, Pei Susu hadn’t expected to encounter someone like this. She was certain Fu Zhichen had no connection with this nurse. She trusted him, at least that much.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t know where your confidence comes from. In any case, Fu Zhichen’s choice has nothing to do with you,” Pei Susu said with a composed smile. “I have business to attend to—could you please step aside?”
Her calm and steady demeanor only seemed to infuriate the nurse further. Pointing a finger at Pei Susu, she snapped, “Women like you don’t deserve President Fu! If I were you, I’d have the decency to leave him. It would be better for everyone.”
Pei Susu was anxious to see Mrs. Chen. She hadn’t anticipated encountering such a lunatic on her way to the ward. There was neither time nor need to argue with a stranger about her relationship with Fu Zhichen. Her patience, already thin, was nearly exhausted; her eyes betrayed her irritation as she said, “Please move.”
Though her words remained polite, Pei Susu’s limited tolerance had been depleted. She attempted to sidestep the nurse, only to be pulled back.
“Where are you going? Feeling guilty, are you? Do you secretly think you’re unworthy of Fu Zhichen? Then hurry up and break up with him!”
Pei Susu hadn’t expected the nurse to suddenly grab her. Something in her hand flashed—a syringe, containing what looked like blood.
Shocked, Pei Susu saw the nurse brandishing the syringe, her expression skittish and unstable.
“Fu Zhichen can only be mine… He can only be mine! You wretch, you don’t deserve to be by his side—you’ll only bring him harm!”
Pei Susu was generally unafraid of such people, but the syringe worried her. If it held contaminated blood and she was stabbed, the consequences could be dire.
A headache seized her. Although she could have acted proactively, she was now forced into dodging the needle. The corridor was eerily empty, not a soul in sight; even if she wanted help, there was nowhere to turn.
“Calm down. We can talk this out,” Pei Susu tried, but her words were utterly ignored. The nurse, wild-eyed, frantically lunged with the syringe, her gaze crazed.
She seemed nothing like a normal person—more a patient escaped from a psychiatric facility.
No—something was wrong.
Pei Susu studied the nurse’s expression and realized she was indeed mentally unstable, likely suffering from some psychiatric disorder.
“Fu Zhichen is mine—mine!”
The nurse screamed, rushing at Pei Susu, who could only dodge in a panic. Suddenly, a steady male voice rang out from nearby.
“Susu!”
It was Fu Zhichen.
He had been turning over thoughts in his office, still uneasy about Pei Susu meeting Mrs. Chen alone. He’d planned to wait outside the ward, ready to intervene if Mrs. Chen caused trouble.
But rounding the corner, he was confronted by this alarming scene.
The nurse, seeing Fu Zhichen, lowered the syringe and stared at him with a gaze both wild and adoring.
“You finally came to see me, Fu Zhichen… I love you so much!”
Fu Zhichen didn’t spare her a glance. Protectively, he drew Pei Susu into his arms.
“Susu, are you alright?”
This unexpected chase hadn’t physically harmed Pei Susu, though it had frightened her. But after today’s many shocks, this was minor by comparison.
“Zhichen, be careful—the syringe in her hand…”
Once she saw Fu Zhichen, the nurse no longer made any rash moves, shrinking back timidly, a stark contrast to the madwoman she’d just been.
Thank goodness.
Though clearly not mentally sound, at least she wasn’t so frantic toward Fu Zhichen.
“Who are you?”
The nurse looked confused—how could someone like her be employed in a hospital?
“I—I’m Xiaofang. I’ve always liked you, President Fu…”
